Let's create your mood with cinematic portraits. I said it before and I'll say it again cinematic portraits are simply my favorite type photography to shoot. I love working with fellow creative personalities that can bring their own energy into the mix. I love dark, moody color and motion to create portraits that give the images a cinematic feel. When I shoot cinematic portraits, I’m not just thinking about the technical side the lens, the light, the color tones. I’m thinking about you. Your energy. Your personality. The story you want to tell. Every detail matters, from the shadows we play with to the small gestures that give the image its emotion.

What I love most is working with fellow creatives artists, entrepreneurs, performers, and anyone who wants more than a cookie-cutter portrait. Creative personalities bring their own rhythm and vision into the session, and that collaboration turns a photoshoot into an experience. Together, we create images that look like they could be pulled straight from a film still.

A cinematic portrait is about more than a look, it’s about creating atmosphere. It’s moody, bold, expressive, and intentional. Whether we’re shooting in a studio, on location, or out in the city, the focus is always the same: telling your story in a way that feels authentic and unforgettable.

I recently read a post about what this creative did when work slowed down. She went back to the basics of shooting what she loved with no requirements or guaranteed deliverables. Simply playing behind the camera and just exploring the free flow of the creative process.

I can honestly say currently I have found myself in this position. I’m so thankful for my professional headshot photography clients in the Bay Area, as they keep the business running. But this quiet space in between has given me a moment to step back, take off my business hat, and reconnect with photography the way that I want. To just play and explore how I create — and that has led me back again to the cinematic portraits that I love.

Here we go again, this creative portrait work that makes me feel something. Is it time to shift my workflow and energy in this direction again? Maybe we’ll see. One thing is for sure — my current direction feels a little like eating buttered burnt toast. I mean, the butter (money) is good, but maybe it’s time to throw out the toast and try something different.
