Working from home be like…

While I’m working on setting up a more dedicated office space, this is my office for now: the family dumping ground. 🥴 Funnily enough, I actually don’t feel like this is *too* chaotic. I’ve seen worse. The rest of my house is clean and my office is close to being done, so now I’m at peace in this mess. I don’t mind because I know it will take about 5 minutes to put everything away. And I *will* put everything away, but some work needed my attention first thing this morning, so I ignored everything and sat down to work.

A mess like this would have overwhelmed me on any other day, but today my windows are open, I’m listening to soothing tunes, and I’m focused. I am in. my. element. I need just a little bit of ✨mess✨ to really feel at home. 🥰

I love this job. I love that I can take my shoes off, open the windows, light a candle, and sit in a mess I can ignore while doing something I love. This is my era and I’m so excited to see what happens next in my mess.

Humans are a social species. We need community support. Trying to go it alone and thinking you don't need help is the true definition of "pull yourself up by your bootstraps." It's literally impossible. I have found for myself that I have to bake accountability into my business. If I don't let myself be accountable, I'll eventually give up. Because I *need* my community for support, advice, and the slight social pressure to keep going. So before launching Ashley Dease, Virtual Assistant™ (*not actually trademarked), I joined a few Facebook groups for virtual assistants (VA) to support each other. I also have a tight group of friends that I love to bounce ideas off of. It's a true gift ( ). This makes it easy for me to be that same support system for fellow business owners who want to make a positive change in the world. I know what getting stuck in growing your business feels like (hello past businesses I've started). It's a crummy spot to be in; you know you need help but are not sure exactly what it is you need. And so you try to do all the research yourself, you try to educate yourself in certain blind spots and follow the advice you find online only to quickly feel overwhelmed. This is where a VA steps in. VAs are the built-in support you need: they offer advice, execute tasks efficiently, and can even be that little bit of social pressure to keep yourself going. If you find yourself drowning in tasks that you hate and knowing you need to grow but don't know how, reach out to a VA (like myself, just saying 💁🏻‍♀️) and get unstuck. I am here to aid you in your success. If you would like to schedule a call, click on the link in my bio to access my available times to request a time to meet.

We have finally reached the end of my "what the heck does Ashley even do" series. Getting this info out is important to me because I want it to be clear to all of you what I offer as a virtual assistant. As I continue on this journey, I’ll keep learning and growing and adding new skills to what I already have. And that honestly excites me. 🤩

This last category, technical skills, is the most fun set of skills I offer, IMO. It’s where I get to flex my creativity, *especially* in the photography and editing area. Some of you may not know this, but I was a photographer in a past life. And I would love to be able to put that skill to good use. Obviously, this is a service that I can only offer to those near me, but there is no thrill better than taking some bomb-ass photos for you and putting them on your website. Whether it is photos of your office, your products, or portraits of you, communicating through photos is a passion of mine. 📸

Now, there may be a few questions about what “light” editing means. For photos, it means using lightroom to adjust the photos to look their best, but not “photoshopping” out anything. For videos, it means I can make a TikTok or Reel for you and can do a simple YouTube video, but going much more complicated than that is not something I am offering right now. 🎞

Ultimately, I’m just really excited I’m here and I get to do something like this. I’ve received so much support from my family and friends and I couldn’t be more grateful for this life that I’m creating. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being here. ❤️

Social Media is tricky. It’s ever-changing and you are subject to the whims of the ✨algorithm.✨ What gets boosted today may be obsolete tomorrow. This is undoubtedly frustrating to small business owners. In a landscape riddled with big box stores and influencers with promoted content, you can feel like a little fish in a big sea. But here is the deal: you don’t have to have content that goes viral every time. Heck, you can have zero likes and comments, and it’s still a success. Do you want to know why? Consistency. 📆

Why is consistency the most important part of social media? Because when a potential customer is looking through your page trying to decide if they want to contact you, they want to see a page FULL of content. If they come to your page and your last post was from 1 month ago, they are most likely going to move on. 🙅🏽‍♀️

What are some obstacles to consistency? The two biggest that most people face are perfectionism and lack of time. Wanting the perfect post every single time is going to prevent you from ever trying. As a 36-year-old perfectionist, trust me, I know. I have *plenty* of experience procrastinating on projects because I want them to be perfect the first time. But DONE is so much more important than perfect. ✅

“But what about lack of time, ASHLEY?!?! I’ve got bigger fish to fry!” And I hear you. Social media doesn’t feel like a real-world problem, but making an appointment with a client is. If social media feels like a big looming cloud over your head because you *should* post something but don’t know what and don’t have the time, I can step in and alleviate that burden. I have the time, I have the creative juices, and I have the desire to see you succeed. And with consistent content, you may even decide to have that content advertised, creating a larger audience to see what you do. Because once you invest in your social media, you invest in the future of your business. 📈

In my last post, I touched on what I do as a VA. I boiled my tasks down into 3 categories. Today's post is category number 1: General Administration. More specifically I handle email management, calendar management, scheduling, billing, onboarding, project management, and customer service. 💻

Administration is essential to business ownership and can be one of the weakest points of business. Emails get lost in the shuffle, schedules get double booked, billing is time-consuming, project management is tedious, and so on. When someone opens their business, their eyes are set on the exciting parts: the services or goods they sell. Photographers want to take photos, potters want to make pottery, enneagram coaches want to consult and teach, and marketing agencies want to work on SEO, but not very many business owners get excited when it comes to setting up project management software. When people hear the words “Honeybook,” “Trello,” or “Asana,” they typically don’t yell, “Yay!” So that is where I come in. To me, those ARE the exciting parts. I love being in a supporting role, cheering you on, and helping you get organized so you can focus on what you do best. When you shine, people are drawn to you. It reminds me of a quote that was written on the wall of my mom’s office when I was growing up. “Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well that when people see you do it they will want to come back and see you do it again and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do.” - Walt Disney ✨

“What exactly do you do?” I’m a new virtual assistant and I have already received this question a lot. I anticipate it to be my most asked question by far. When I hear this question, I translate it to, “what exactly is a virtual assistant (VA) and what services do you personally offer?” 🧐

Let’s start with the first question, what is a VA? In the most basic terms, a VA is an administrative assistant where all of the work is done remotely. From customer service to graphic design, VA’s offer a wide variety of services. And no two VA’s are alike. Some excel at billing and bookkeeping, some are more on the technical side of things like website creation and coding, while others offer general admin services and social media management. Whatever your needs are, there is a VA out there that can do them. 💪🏻

Now the most important question, what do I do? This week I’ll have several posts going into detail what my skills are, but the jist of it is general administration, social media management, and technical skills. In the next several posts I’ll break each of those categories into specifics. 👓

I thought about doing my makeup, fixing my hair just right, and putting on a cute outfit as an introduction of myself, but that’s not who I am. And honestly, if I was waiting on perfection, it’s not gonna happen. I’d rather get myself out there with a regular ass selfie than try to aim for the perfect, professional portrait. So here I am. Moving forward. And that’s what I can bring to your business: forward motion.

As someone who has been feeling stuck since having my first kid 6 years ago, I know what it’s like to be forced to put your priorities on the back burner just to deal with emergencies. And *everything* in a child’s world is an emergency. 😅🥴🫠

Running a business is similar. Things that have to be dealt with *right now* get in the way of prioritizing tasks that lead to forward motion. So, let me help you get unstuck. Handoff those tasks that get in the way of your priorities, so you can move forward. ⏩
