Several species of ticks can inhabit home lawns, and some of them have the potential to transmit serious diseases!

Ticks are usually brought into the home lawn aboard pets or other animals. The first step in controlling ticks in the home lawn is to control ticks on any pets that use the area. There are a number of effective treatments that can be used on dogs and cats to control ticks. Consult your local vet about these products.

The second step to control ticks in the home lawn is to limit access of wild animals and stray pets to the lawn area. Fenced lawns tend to have fewer tick problems than unfenced lawns. Obviously, keeping pets penned so that they are unable to roam the woods and collect ticks will help prevent ticks from being brought into the yard.

Keeping vegetation cut low, so people and pets can walk through an area without brushing against tall weeds and grass blades, also reduces the risk of tick infestation.

When lawns do become infested with ticks, there are several effective spray treatments available.

Granular products are generally less effective than sprays. Concentrate treatments on areas where pets rest, along game trails and areas where wildlife visit, around building perimeters, and on any tall, weedy vegetation in the area. (Click link below for more info on this.)

Take precautions to reduce the chances of being bitten by ticks. Tuck pant legs into the tops of boots, tuck in shirttails, and use an effective tick repellant. Repellants containing the active ingredient permethrin are especially effective against ticks, but read labels carefully. Repellents containing permethrin may not be applied directly to the skin, but may be applied to clothing only. Repellants containing the active ingredient DEET are also useful against ticks.

We get asked from time to time if our honey is “organic” and we have to explain that using the organic label on one’s honey is nothing more than a marketing gimmick to either sell the honey or to sell it at a marked-up price because the customer is being led to believe they’re actually getting organic honey. In order to say one’s honey is organic, the beekeeper must own and control about 7 square miles of flora that they know for sure has no pesticides or other chemicals on any of the plants the bees gather nectar from.

A simple internet search about organic honey sold in the USA produces this answer:

Can Honey Produced in the US Be Guaranteed to Be Organic?

Cannot be guaranteed to be organic

In the United States, honey cannot be guaranteed to be organic due to the lack of regulations. The USDA's National Organic Program states that certifiers can certify honey but does not provide guidance on criteria for use. There are no current standards for the term "organic" on honey, so anyone can claim their honey is organic as long as they don’t use the USDA seal. Certified organic honey must be certified from another country. The USDA has recommended guidelines for organic honey since 2001, but an actual organic standard for honey has been in the works since 2001. The most recent version of those recommendations suggests a 2-mile radius for organic forage, but many beekeepers suggest a larger area should be pesticide-free. As a result, the USDA cannot certify any American produced honey as organic.

So don't fall for "organic" just because the label says so! Ask questions and do your research! 🧐
