🔥 Texas Neighbors: Fire Season is PEAKING – Protect Your Home with Mulching & Fire Breaks! 🔥
With dry grasses, windy days, and elevated wildfire risk across North Texas right now (and no big rains in sight), it’s time to take action. Creating defensible space around your home or property is one of the smartest, most effective steps you can take — and mulching combined with fire breaks are powerful tools recommended by the Texas A&M Forest Service.
Here’s what you need to know:
🛡️ Fire Breaks
These are cleared strips of land (typically 20–66+ feet wide) that remove vegetation and create a barrier to slow or stop wildfire spread. Place them along property lines, around your house, barn, or fences. They also give firefighters better access. Think driveways, paths, or strategically cleared zones — simple but lifesaving!
🌱 Mulching (Two Smart Ways)
1. Forestry/Mechanical Mulching (great for larger lots or acreage): Heavy-duty machines grind brush, cedar, small trees, and tall grass into a fine, low-lying layer right on site. This reduces “ladder fuels” (stuff that carries fire up into trees), cuts fire intensity dramatically, improves soil health, controls erosion, and prevents fast regrowth. No burning or hauling debris needed!
2. Landscaping Mulch Near Your Home: Ditch flammable wood, bark, or rubber mulch within 5–30 feet of your house. Switch to non-combustible rock, gravel, or decomposed granite instead. It still helps with water retention and weeds but won’t feed the flames if embers land.
✅ Quick Wins for Defensible Space
• Clear 30 feet minimum around structures (100 feet if possible).
• Mow grasses short, prune low branches, and remove dead stuff.
• Combine mulching + fire breaks for the best protection.
Landowners in some areas can even qualify for grants to help cover professional mulching and fuel reduction work!
