Here are some tips for testing your well water:
Frequency
Test your well water annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH levels. You should also check for mechanical problems every spring and test more often if the water's taste, color, or smell changes.
Contaminants
If you suspect other contaminants, you should test for those as well. For example, shallow, poorly sealed, or poorly constructed wells are more likely to be contaminated with nitrates. You can also test for f***l indicator organisms like E. coli.
Sampling
To test your water, you can use a test kit or have an accredited lab analyze a sample. If you use a test kit, make sure to follow the directions carefully, including writing down the date and time you filled the bottles. If you use a lab, you'll need to provide information like the type of well you have and whether you use chlorine treatment.
Signs that your water needs testing
You can look for signs that your water might be contaminated, such as foul odors, stomach issues, or other illnesses in household members.
