We are going to introduce a member of our Wild Wildebeest Safaris team weekly. Today we are starting the introductions with Tony du Bruyn, our a co-owner, outfitter and professional hunter at WWS.
We asked Tony if he could share his most memorable hunting story (He almost could not choose):
“One of my clients, Uncle Terry Patton and I went on a 21-day Leopard and buffalo hunt. Terry wanted to drive rather than fly to our concession South of the Kunene River in the North of Namibia. It took us 3 full days to get there! It was such an adventure. We had to take all our necessities with us as we stayed at a ”Self Catering lodge” in the rural land of the Ovahimbas.
I was rather sceptical about the idea of the trip as we were in the middle of a drought and there was limited water and almost no game . All the odds for a good hunt was against us. I shared my negativity with Uncle Terry. He replied: “Tony, I so enjoyed the adventure to get here and is thrilled to experience this pristine untouched area of the world - if we go home with nothing it was still money spent well.”
We met our Ovahimba guide the night we arrived. With some assistance from our Herero skinner, we went to visit the Chiefs from the tribes in that area. We wanted them to take us to an almost impossible spot where there is water. The next day we drove and walked 35km over 9 hours. On our way there we shot a Hartsmans Zebra for Leopard bait. We walked with the Zebra deeper into the valley. We could see zig-zag wornout wildlife paths coming down from the cliffs that were hundreds of years old. After another few hours of walking we saw parrots and knew we were near water. We arrived at a small oasis of water. There was a fountain about 2 meters wide. We instantly knew that we were probably the first white people to ever set foot here. Upon investigating the area, we found black rhino and leopard tracks. On day 3 the leopard was shot, and we returned to SA on day 5 to hunt buffalo."
