Happy ! We are soon going be within fall seedling planting season, and now is the time to plan ahead and connect with your community. On Wednesday, September 9th, at Five Shores Brewing, we will be hosting a Neighbor Network Mixer with Benzie Conservation District. Come enjoy a drink on us (drink tickets available for the first 20 attendees) and meet other tree planting enthusiasts who are interested in helping others with their forest management projects. Please RSVP (through this registration link https://michiganforestassociation.app.neoncrm.com/nx/portal/neonevents/events?path=%2Fportal%2Fevents%2F53739) so we can plan ahead for complementary appetizers and snacks.

Since 2024, the Benzie Neighbor Network has grown to over 90 Neighbors who have planted 3,275 seedlings (many of which are purchased from the BCD seedling sales!) across 7 planting projects conducted on private forest lands. You can learn more at www.michiganforests.org/neighbor-network/. β˜€οΈπŸŒ³πŸŒ²πŸͺΎ

Happy ! We wanted to remind you that is alive and well in Michigan and it may be affecting red oaks near you! You would notice an infected tree if it is exhibiting out-of-season behavior like leaf browning and premature leaf drop. If you believe you have a red oak infected by oak wilt (Bretziella fagacearum), you can:

πŸ‚ Take a sample of diagnostic leaves or a branch to send to MSU Extension Plant & Pest Diagnostic Lab to confirm oak wilt is indeed in your area.

πŸ‚ Read up on oak wilt biology and management through online resources like Oak Wilt Coalition, MSU Extension, and even our Resources for Landowners web page on www.michiganforests.org.

πŸ‚ Call a local tree care provider or International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) to consult about your property and implement mitigation strategies.

Oak wilt is a tough disease to deal with, but there are educational resources to learn from and management options available to work with your property. Good luck, and please ask us any questions. β˜€οΈπŸŒ³πŸŒ²πŸͺΎπŸ‚
