Today I started a class from Yale called The Science of Well-Being. I am drinking it in like a thirsty toddler. Let me describe in case you need a refresher on what that looks and feels like. (refresher, ha!) Toddlers are very active and BUSY. So preoccupied with all the things, they neglect their needs until BAM! “What is this dryness? Is it hot in here? I can’t go on. Must! Have! Drink!” It’s urgent. And when they get their clumsy, chubby little hands on that cup, they slosh it to their mouth where they slurp, gurgle, and spill it everywhere. It’s cute, annoying, and messy.
My scribbled notes already need a rewrite to clean up the mess. My heart is already exuding thanks for quenching my thirsty soul. I’ve already marched into the kitchen to whip up a Blueberry Lavender Buckle after daydreaming it up last week. And I’m already inspired to bring my friends back to the well for a drink of their own.
My coaching certification is in Integrative Wellness. I think about well-being and the lack of it constantly. I think about the well-being of myself, my family, you, our community, our country... it’s the impetus for my relationships, activism, volunteer work, coaching my clients, my creative endeavors, and even the entertainment I choose. It gives me purpose and sometimes, anxiety.
And that’s the crux, right? Especially right now. We are like active toddlers consumed with all the usual life amped up with extra responsibilities, fear, and frustration. And oh the noise! Is this the noisiest year ever? Talk about overstimulation. We’re tired and we’re thirsty. We need each other.
I am explicitly thinking of the empaths, caretakers, helpers, nurturers—the ones who are feeling the weight both tangibly and spiritually. Some of you need a guide and a visionary to help you find your way out of the desert.
There are 99 days left in 2020. I’m not willing to sacrifice them to the vultures. I want to live them fully. Do you? This afternoon, I mapped out a way that I can hold space, encourage, and guide a small thirsty group to refreshment. It might be a hike but I am confident we can make it. If you’re interested in the details, let me know. We set off October 5th!
