This post is for information on a newborn's stomach capacity. This is not pro or against any type of infant feeding. It's strictly for informational reference. Please discuss all breastfeeding or formula feeding questions with your, and your child's, healthcare provider.
See that tiny pink bead on my lanyard? That is the size of a newborn's tiny tummy. When baby is born, the birthing parent produces colostrum for baby, which is the perfect for baby. Colostrum contains just the amount of food baby needs and passes antibodies. It's ! In this photo, I have a standard 2 ounce bottle of formula that is given to new babies. So, if baby's belly is only the size of a marble, what happens when baby is fed 2 ounces? Well, baby will usually spit up all the extra, which then can be spinned into baby having reflux. When really, baby is just being over fed. This leads to interventions like formula changes, antacid medications, etc. It's important that we give families all the available information so they can make the best decisions for their families.
Wow! The response to this post has blown me away. First, I'd like to thank you all for sharing this post and your stories. Second, I'd like to point out that as a Doula, I support ALL my clients no matter if they breastfeed or formula feed. You will never hear me say breast is best OR fed is best. There's a reason for that.... It's not up to me to decide what is best. It's my job to support my client's choices. Please keep your comments respectful ✌❤
******** My hope for everyone who shared here on this thread is that you were SUPPORTED in YOUR choice to feed your child(ren), however that looked for you. Support is key. Being a parent is tough. Spread positivity ✌❤
Signed - A doula and mother who has given her children BOTH breastmilk and formula. There will NEVER be shame coming from my page. Please be respectful of others! ❤
