Today I had the privilege of playing at Ale Disc Golf Center near Gothenburg, Sweden on its reopening day (April 1st, 2023). When the facility closed in March of 2021, its two courses were collectively ranked #7 in the world. Ale was recently purchased by a generous and ambitious business man named Vincent, and he has returned the courses to their former glory. I played the yellow course today, and it is definitely the best course I have ever played. It has excellent shot diversity, significant elevation changes, and water hazards so beautiful you can’t even get mad at them. The towering trees of this Swedish forest are challenging but somewhat forgiving obstacles, as the trunks are usually clear of branches on the lower ~30 feet. The whole course incorporates natural features of the landscape extremely well (elevated baskets mounted into boulders, for example), and I played with a great group who was kind enough to speak in English the entire time just for my sake. Also, the gloomy and wet weather which has been covering Gothenburg for the last few days cleared up just in time for the course to reopen today; we had fat snowflakes and some sleet yesterday, but perfect sunshine today. It was still 28-42 degrees though, so… pretty cold.
If you’d like to see the course on YouTube, it was home to the European Open in 2018 (https://youtu.be/YTXCwD91kk0). Just know that not even video coverage can do this place justice.
