Murphy is a bald eagle who cannot fly. Years ago, an injury left him permanently grounded, and he has lived under the care of the World Bird Sanctuary in Missouri.

In March 2023, the caretakers there began to notice something that made them stop and look twice.

Murphy was building a nest.

He gathered twigs one by one. He arranged them carefully. Then he settled into the nest and began to brood just as a wild eagle would during nesting season.

There was only one strange detail.

The egg he guarded so fiercely was not an egg at all.

It was a rock.

Day after day Murphy sat over that stone with complete dedication. If another eagle wandered too close, he drove it away. He protected his nest with the same intensity any wild parent would show.

The staff watched quietly. The sight was touching, but there was also something sad about it. Murphy’s instincts were strong. His determination was real. Yet the nest held nothing but a cold piece of earth.

Then something unexpected happened.

Around that same time, the sanctuary received an orphaned eaglet. The tiny bird had no parents and little chance of surviving on its own. It needed warmth, protection, and constant care.

The caretakers looked at Murphy.

If this eagle could guard a rock with such fierce devotion, what might he do if the chick were real?

Carefully, they decided to try.

The rock was lifted from the nest.
The small eaglet was placed in its place.

For a brief moment everyone waited.

Murphy leaned forward.

He studied the tiny bird.

Then, without hesitation, he settled over the chick and pulled it gently beneath his wings.

From that moment on, Murphy became exactly what the young bird needed.

He fed the eaglet.
He kept it warm through the night.
He stood guard over the nest with quiet determination.

The same instinct that once protected a stone was now giving a helpless life a chance to grow.

Word of Murphy’s story quickly spread far beyond the sanctuary. People around the world followed the progress of the unlikely father and the chick he had chosen to raise.

Murphy cannot soar through the sky the way wild eagles do. That part of his life ended long ago.

But in another way, his spirit never left the air.

A bird that once sat over a rock out of pure instinct became the protector of a living chick that had no one else. His story reminds us that care, patience, and devotion often matter more than blood or circumstance.

Sometimes love begins in the most unlikely place.

Even in a nest that once held nothing but a stone. 🦅💛

This Mississippi Kite and its mate have returned to a nest in my neighbor's yard. It's roughly 30 feet up. The male showed up first, restoring it 2 weeks ago. The female is now sitting in it.
I have been shooting them for the past week and a half. It has been challenging. This shot was captured one morning last week. You'll notice the nest is mostly pine branches and needles. I have over two hundred images to review. This is one of the first.
The Mississippi Kite is a bird of prey that is about the size of a falcon, smaller than a hawk but larger than a crow. I hope one of my images shows them with prey. They are native to most of the SE USA, but do come here as well. In the spring, I can spot up to 8 of them riding the thermal updrafts at a time.
More pics to follow.

My two great nieces, Maya and Charlotte, and my great-nephew, Joe. I took this photo with my Nikon D850 on Christmas Eve at my sister Phyllis' house in SE Arizona. Nikon D850, w/ AF-S Nikkor 24-120 ED Lens , ISO 400, F/5.6, 1/125 sec. using a Nikon speed-light bouncing flash off the ceiling.

Hello all, I spent Christmas with my family in Wetstone, AZ. I wanted a family photo, so I brought my camera gear. It would have been better outside, before the sunset, but several showed up to the Christmas Eve party too late to do it. So I crowded them up for an inside shot with a bounce flash off the ceiling using my Nikon D850 with a 24-70 Nikon lens. I set the shutter timer for 6 seconds, so I could get in the pic. Everyone cooperated to get this.

Meet 'Buddy,' JUSTIN CREDIBLE PINE. He's an award-winning AQHA & NFQHA-registered gelding. He was born here on April 12, 2000. I took this photo late in the afternoon in the fall of 2018 here. I was babysitting him. He is now living the high life in Tennessee as a show horse for a little girl. There are greener pastures there. I miss him, but not his dinner-time attitude.

The F-35A from the 388th Fighter Wing, Hill AFB, Utah. I captured this image last June during the Tinker AFB's practice day before the weekend Airshow.
The F-35A Lightning II is the U.S. Air Force’s newest fifth-generation fighter. The Lightning II is a stealthy, multirole, all-weather air-to-air and surface attack fighter. It is designed to enable direct attack against the most heavily defended ground targets. It will replace the U.S. Air Force’s aging fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolt II’s, which have been the primary fighter aircraft for more than 20 years, and bring with it an enhanced capability to survive in the advanced threat environment in which it was designed to operate. With its aerodynamic performance and advanced integrated avionics, the F-35A will provide next-generation stealth, enhanced situational awareness, and reduced vulnerability for the United States and allied nations.
