I love working with AI! I use it all the time. I use it to research and learn, organize my thoughts, troubleshoot, make cool ads when I don’t have time to create in Canva… you name it.

But on Wednesday morning, I was double-checking my own work on Independent Living options for a family in the Kansas City area — making sure I hadn’t left any rock unturned.

My AI was helpful right up until it decided to become a senior placement advisor. 😂 It started telling me how many communities I should show them and which ones were “best.”

One problem though: it didn’t know this family and I hadn’t given it the details about the communities about our discussion. So it didn’t know what they value, the parameters they set with me, or what they specifically asked me to find. If I’d followed its recommendations, I would NOT have honored what this family actually wants and needs.

I’ve never actually heard anyone say “MacGyver Generation” out loud — so let’s start using it here!! 😆

And what I mean by that is are you fiercely independent? Want to figure it out yourself? Do you turn over every rock before deciding?
I relate to that! If that’s you too, please keep reading.

From one DIY person to another: we encourage you to use AI! Google everything. Read the reviews. Ask a hundred questions. Talk to friends.

And then bring what you’ve learned to someone who knows the local senior living communities, the staff and culture, the regulations, the nuances that impact pricing and care, and what happens after move-in — things you simply don’t learn from a search result.

Mom or Dad aren’t usually fully independent one day and then they suddenly need someone to handle everything for them the next. Though that happens too…

Anything can happen, right?

The truth about aging and long-term care is that things are rarely completely one way or another.

More often, there has been a long period of inertia somewhere in between—where things are still working, but not quite as independently as they once were.

Maybe they’re still driving, but you’re helping with appointments. They’re living at home, but someone is managing medications, checking in more often, bringing meals, handling finances, or quietly filling in the gaps.

And sometimes, that in-between place actually works for a long, long time.

Until something happens.

A fall. A hospitalization. A change in cognition or mobility. A caregiver who simply can’t keep doing everything they’ve been doing.

And now things have to change.

Long-term care probably isn’t usually an experience any of us is rooting for. We really do understand why people resist thinking about it or making plans around it while things are still working “well enough.”

But there is another way to think about it.

We have choices!

We may not get to directly choose everything that happens to us as we age, but we can actively participate in creating the experience we will have—and the experience of those who love and support us—in the ways that we can.

We can learn our options. Talk about what matters. Think about where and how we would want to live if our needs and circumstances change. While we have time we can make decisions with more information and less urgency.

That isn’t surrendering our independence or deciding today exactly what the future will look like.

In many ways, it’s the opposite.

It’s choosing to have a voice in what comes next.

And you deserve that.

Today at Costco, I was grabbing a shopping cart when I overheard a man talking on the phone. “…now her oxygen level is too low…” I heard him say.

Later, (still shopping), I heard another person in passing, telling someone about her experience when her mother passed unexpectedly.

Two completely unrelated conversations. One ordinary trip to Costco. And it struck me how often life changes without asking if we’re ready. The future belongs to the version of ourselves we’re caring for today.

Here’s what I’ve learned helping families navigate senior care decisions: Most adult children aren’t spending much time thinking about their parents’ future care needs if nothing dire is going on. Not because we don’t love them or it’s not important. Maybe because we don’t want to think about it and especially because life is really busy. It’s easy to assume there will be more time.

Then suddenly there isn’t.

A hospitalization. A fall. A diagnosis. A rehab discharge. An unexpected loss. Families find themselves making important decisions under extreme pressure. The long term care world is a lot different than “regular life,” and there’s a lot to know about it.

I also know that if we’re not thinking much about our parents’ future until life forces the conversation, many of us are probably thinking even less about our own! 🫤

Over the last couple years, David and I have been having more conversations together about our own health, future, and the lifestyle choices we’re making. We know planning doesn’t guarantee our outcome. Life will continue to surprise us.

We plan because the planning creates possibilities and in this case- room to make decisions from thoughtfulness instead of urgency.

I do believe the future belongs to the version of ourselves we’re caring for today.

And maybe one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves and the people we love is the willingness to have these conversations before we need them.

My little sister, brother-in-law, and dad are all veterans and my Gramps was too as were many friends over the years.

My grandfather, Andrew C. Ruoff, was an orthopedic surgeon who helped create one of the first prosthetic arms, ran MASH units during wartime, and was part of the teams that helped develop many of the lifesaving policies and emergency response practices EMS still follows today. He was one of the best story tellers I’ve ever known and I’ve often desired to emulate some of that as my dad before me also does! I remember him sharing how many of the medical advances developed during war eventually became part of everyday medical care and rehabilitation.

Today, I’m thinking not only of those who sacrificed their lives, but also of the generations of families, caregivers, medical teams, and veterans forever changed by war.

We remember each of them with great love, gratitude, and we honor all who served — and all who sacrificed beside them. 🇺🇸

A few weeks ago David and I were interviewed about senior placement by Glenn Stockton on The Smart Legacy Podcast.

We were both nervous 😅 and will definitely have to practice this new skill more to get comfortable talking on camera, but it felt important to us to follow through anyway because so many families are suddenly faced with trying to understand senior care and we know it’s a lot.

Everything from the understanding the differences between Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Residential Care Homes,, Skilled nursing, Rehab, understanding Medicaid and Medicare, Elder Law, financial planning, home health care, physical therapy on and on- there’s so so much more — and people often have to learn it during some of the most stressful and emotional times in their life.

It’s really important to us to help families feel more informed, empowered, and less alone while navigating these decisions.

One common misunderstanding about hospice is that it means “we’re giving up.”

In reality, hospice often means someone is receiving increased care and visits that help them feel better, rest better, breathe easier, and sometimes even stabilize or improve — because their whole life is being supported, not just their diagnosis. Many times, and for
various reasons families wait longer than they need to before adding this valuable service.

During my years working in long term care, I have seen and experienced value firsthand with Ascend Hospice. They followed many of our residents over time, and many times I watched people become more comfortable, more peaceful, and more supported — along with their families.

This is Marlo, one of their local team members. I value working with her because she truly cares about the people and situations behind the referrals.
