📸 A Friendly Reminder About Weather & Photography Sessions ☀️🌧️
As photographers, one thing we simply cannot control is the weather. I wish I had that superpower, but unfortunately I don't! 😊
When making decisions about outdoor sessions, all I can do is monitor the forecast and make the best call possible based on what weather apps are predicting. Sometimes those forecasts are spot on, and sometimes they're completely wrong. There is simply no way for any of us to know with certainty what the weather will actually do.
This means there may be times when we choose to reschedule a session due to a forecast calling for rain or storms, only for the weather to end up being beautiful. That's frustrating for everyone involved, but it's a risk we sometimes have to take to avoid getting caught in unsafe or unusable conditions.
On the other hand, there are times when we decide to move forward with a session and it ends up pouring rain, making it impossible to shoot. Again, that's something beyond anyone's control.
Another factor that is often overlooked is what conditions are like after the rain stops. Even if we catch a break in the rain or storms, that doesn't necessarily mean conditions are suitable for a session. The ground may still be wet, muddy, and soggy, making it difficult to walk, sit, or safely access certain areas.
Additionally, when the sun comes out after a storm, it often becomes extremely humid and muggy. Wet shoes, damp clothing, muddy feet, and excessive sweating can make for a very uncomfortable experience for everyone involved. While the rain itself may have stopped, the overall conditions may still not be ideal for creating beautiful images or providing an enjoyable session experience.
Please also keep in mind that I often have multiple sessions scheduled and cannot always wait longer than 20–30 minutes to see if the weather clears. Just as you may have spent time getting ready, packing up your family, and driving to a location, I have also spent time preparing equipment, traveling, and reserving that time on my calendar. If a session cannot take place due to weather, I too have made the trip for nothing and lost the opportunity to book other work during that reserved time.
For that reason, deposits remain non-refundable. Reschedules are absolutely available whenever possible, but the purpose of a deposit is to compensate for the time that has been reserved, regardless of whether Mother Nature cooperates. As a small business owner, photography is my livelihood, and my time is just as valuable as anyone else's.
Think of it this way: if you go to work and spend time there, you still expect to be paid for that time, even if circumstances beyond your control prevent it from being your most productive day. Deposits help protect the time that has been set aside specifically for your session.
I truly appreciate your understanding, patience, and respect when it comes to weather-related decisions. My goal is always to provide the best experience possible and create beautiful images while making the most informed decision I can with the information available at the time.
