Rickey Sewell Sentenced Following BCSO Investigation

The Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office announced that Rickey James Sewell, 41, has been sentenced to 50 to 72 months in North Carolina state prison following his guilty plea to attempted trafficking in fentanyl, possession of a firearm by a felon in the commission of a crime, and possession of a stolen firearm.

The charges stem from a February 8 traffic stop conducted by Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office deputies after Sewell was observed driving without headlights. Deputies discovered Sewell had active outstanding warrants. A subsequent search resulted in the seizure of six grams of fentanyl, $484 in cash, and a stolen 9mm pistol located underneath the driver’s seat.

This case was investigated by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office. We appreciate the work of our deputies and investigators, as well as our continued partnership with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, to hold offenders accountable and keep dangerous drugs and illegally possessed fi****ms out of our community.

Sheriff Garry McFadden told county commissioners Tuesday night that 2,235 people were being held at Mecklenburg County’s Jail Central facility that day — the highest-ever recorded population for that facility in a single day.
