I took a weekend for myself to give the PKM it's full overhaul recently. The foundation for this was swapping in a Bullgear CNC gearbox to replace the very problematic Retro Arms gearbox that was in there previously. With the exception of having to cut down an SR25 length cylinder and turning down the diameter of the hopup chamber inlet slightly, this went together almost too easily. I could maybe stuff in a heavier spring to bring it fully into LMG limits, but this beast isn't really lacking for ability to cull the mutant child soldier hordes 😅

turned me onto these Specna Arms rotary AK chambers a few games ago, so I brought in a handful to test out myself. I've since installed one into every AK I own and am happy to report that they work fantastic in LCT's with excellent accuracy results. The design itself is far superior to LCT's extremely problematic rotary chamber and it drops straight in without mods. Best of all, it works flawlessly with both the LCT factory air nozzle as well as the Retro Arms 19.50mm nozzles too. It also has no issues with the magwell spacer either. So with all that being said, I am confident in saying that I will be using these as standard in all future LCT builds forward!

After sorta reaching a dead end with HAO and their unwillingness to take measurements, I started looking into other rail options for the KWA HK416A5. My customer mentioned he had a VFC 416 MLOK rail kicking around and so told him to send it over and I'll see if I can't make it fit.

The 416's barrel nut is too large in diameter to fit into the rail, however with a lathe you could just turn it down and make it work and just refinish it afterwards. I found this random Geissele MK8 barrel nut that had the right diameter and threads (32P x 1.5). I just had to shorten it up to match the length of the KWA barrel nut and cut in a groove so the clamp would clear. This worked perfectly and the rail clamps on rock solid.

The MLOK rail really transforms the feel of the front end. The stock quad rail weighs 1 lbs 2 oz., while this MLOK rail comes in at a much lighter 8 oz, for a total reduction of 10 oz. off the front. You could actually shave an additional 12 oz. off by swapping back to the KWA 416 barrel, which is made from aluminum. And even a little more if you converted an aluminum barrel nut vs. steel. That being said, the steel Z-Parts barrel is rigid AF and the balance feels rather good now; with the center of balance being right at the front of the trigger guard. But also, quad rails just suck the joy out of everything IMO 😅

I rarely see one of these come through that doesn't need a grip or stock replacement (because they use the cheapest plastic), or have to have multiple screws extracted (because they're made of Jell-O).

I'm working on the elusive KWA HK416A5 ERG today. There's been a lot of questions about this model, and a lot unknown. By and large these are the same under the hood as the rest of KWA's ERG lineup. I have confirmed that some of these will have the AEG 3.0 gearbox with mechanical cutoff and some will have the 3.0+ with the KWA ETU. Retailers unfortunately seem to be confused which version they are actually stocking, however!

The main difference from the normal ERG lineup is that the 416 uses a GBBR outer barrel with a brass sleeve insert to align the hopup chamber. The receiver threads are a fairly conventional 32 pitch x 1.5 length, same as the rest of KWA's AEG lineup (also what CYMA, et. al. use too). Currently your only option for dropping in a shorter 10.5" barrel is to source the steel Z-Parts KSC HK416 GBBR outer barrel. This is a chonky bastard and will actually increase your net weight by 12oz. It also needs to be modified a little to clear the top of the hopup chamber. In theory a HAO Geissele rail should fit, perhaps with some modification of the tab that indexes into the upper receiver.

The buffer tube on the 416 is approximately a 1/2" longer than normal, accounting for the larger castle nut. This in turn means the end cap guide rod is unique to the 416 series and has a longer stem and brass spacer installed to compensate for the added length without introducing a longer recoil weight and/or springs. It would, of course, be possible to install a standard buffer tube, castle nut and end cap if a more compact collapsed stock position was desired.

I have to make mention of the motor grip. This is by far the nicest 416 motor grip I've ever seen. It dispenses with the goofy long tab thingy the VFC grips and clones use and uses a nice metal motor plate as well as a metal locking plug. The plug itself has a set screw you can tighten down to tension the plug against the motor plate. This would ensure the plug will never get loose or lost as we are accustomed to with VFC's grips. Internally, there is plenty of room for larger 16AWG wire and the modern brushless motors we are using. It's just beautifully done.

Another Rattler build in the books! The new Warhead Base V2 has been installed in this one, and I have to say it's a beautiful little motor with an ingenious unidirectional bearing design. I can see that I will be incorporating a lot of these into future builds!

In my experience, even using POM nozzles on an aluminum cylinder head will still result in a fair amount of wear over time. This example was from an AEG just sent in for service at about the 135K mark. Of course, cylinder heads with a stainless steel or bronze stems will hold up a bit better; but like everything else inside the gearbox, one should consider these parts consumables.

Interestingly, compression was still nice and tight on this example. The issue that resulted in this AEG being sent in for was due to a broken anti-reversal latch spring. 🙃
