You don't have a too-much-work problem.

You have an emotional regulation problem.

And the data makes the cost of that undeniable.

Emotional intelligence — not IQ, not experience — is the single greatest predictor of professional performance. And the income gap between those who develop it and those who don't? Tens of thousands of dollars a year. Every year.

That's not soft. That's a spreadsheet.

Here's what low emotional regulation actually looks like in a high achiever:

→ You say yes when every cell in your body says no
→ You react to small things with outsized energy — and feel ashamed after
→ You lead brilliantly in the room and fall apart in the car on the way home
→ You can't switch off, even when there's nothing left to give

The work isn't the problem.

Your relationship with your own inner world is.

And neuroscience confirms — that can change.

Because you can't lead others further than you've led yourself.

What emotion are you most avoiding right now? Be honest — just with yourself. ⬇️

I recently facilitated a small group of women in St. Barths.

One was a bride-to-be — there with her mother.
All were high-performing women standing at a threshold — accomplished, driven, and carrying something quietly beneath the surface that the world outside never sees.

They came for beauty. They stayed for the reckoning.

What we did together — Courageous Leadership best practices, somatic exercises, ceremony, and the particular grace of sitting in a circle with the Caribbean as witness — wasn't a retreat from their lives.

It was an arrival into them.

The biggest thing I see in high-performing women right now isn't a skills gap. It's an inner architecture gap. We keep adding to the structure. We rarely ask whether the ground we're building on has actually shifted.

The world we're living in is asking something different of its leaders now. Not more. Deeper.

I wrote about what happened in St. Barths — the tools, the breakthroughs, and the question I keep returning to — in this week's newsletter.

Many leaders misdiagnose what’s actually undermining productivity.
And it’s costing more than they realize.

We tend to look at:

Workload
Staffing
Time pressure

And while those matter…
they’re not the whole story.

Research—including Google’s Project Aristotle—found that the highest-performing teams share one defining factor:

Psychological safety.

The ability to:

Speak up
Ask questions
Address mistakes

But here’s the part we don’t talk about enough:

In any given moment…
something happens—

And we instantly assign meaning.

That meaning drives:

How we feel
How we respond
How we communicate

And it happens in milliseconds.

Two people can experience the same situation…
and walk away with completely different reactions.

Because it’s not just what happened—
it’s the meaning each person made of what happened.

When we feel:

Judged
Unsupported
At risk

It often leads to:

Reactivity
Defensiveness
Escalation

And over time…
that shapes the culture around us.

A simple pause can change everything:

“What did I just make that mean?”

This is the work I do with leadership teams—
helping people stay grounded, think clearly, and lead effectively under pressure.

If this resonates, I go deeper into this dynamic—and how to shift it in real time—in my latest newsletter: https://conta.cc/4t3wue1

Curious—where have you seen this show up?
