I see businesses make the same security camera mistakes over and over:

→ Buying consumer Ring or Nest cameras for a commercial building
→ Storing footage on an SD card that fails silently after 6 months
→ Installing cameras with no night vision in a parking lot
→ Putting cameras on the same unsegmented network as their business systems
→ No remote viewing capability — footage is only accessible on a DVR in a closet

Commercial-grade video surveillance is a different product category entirely. We deploy 3xLogic camera systems for our business clients because they're built for 24/7 operation, support remote monitoring, integrate with access control, and the video analytics are genuinely useful — not gimmicks.

And critically, we put camera systems on a separate VLAN. Your security cameras should not be on the same network segment as your payment processing or file servers. That's not theoretical — IP cameras have been used as entry points in real breaches.
If you're protecting a building, protect it properly.

If a switch fails at 2 AM and nobody's monitoring it, when do you find out? At 8 AM when everyone walks in and nothing works.

Network monitoring means your systems are watched 24/7 by software that alerts us the moment something goes wrong — before your team even notices.

We monitor everything: firewall health, switch port status, bandwidth utilization, disk space, CPU load, backup success/failure, and security alerts.

Last month, our monitoring flagged a failing hard drive in a client's server at 11 PM. We replaced it the next morning during off-hours. The client never knew there was a problem. That's how it should work.

The alternative is finding out when the drive fails and you're down for a day.

After managing IT for businesses across WNY, these are the mistakes I see over and over:

1. No documentation. Nobody knows the admin password to the firewall. It's in a sticky note that fell behind a desk in 2019.
2. Flat networks. Every device on one network segment. If ransomware gets one machine, it gets everything.
3. No offsite backup. The backup drive is sitting on top of the server. In the same room. Under the same sprinkler head.
4. Ignoring firmware updates. Your SonicWall firewall is 3 years behind on patches. Known vulnerabilities are public information.
5. Treating IT as a cost to minimize instead of an investment to optimize.

Every one of these is fixable. Most of them are fixable in a week.

Most consumer WiFi routers have one job: get internet to your phone on the couch.

Business networking is a different animal.
When we design a network for a client, we start with a site survey. How many users? What applications? Where are the dead spots? What devices need wired connections? How do we keep guest traffic separated from business-critical systems?

We standardize on Ubiquiti UniFi for our clients' switching and wireless.

Here's why:

→ Enterprise-grade visibility without enterprise pricing
→ Centralized management — we can see and configure every access point and switch from one dashboard
→ VLAN support for network segmentation (critical for PCI, HIPAA, and general security)
→ PoE switching so access points don't need separate power runs
→ Real-time traffic analytics so we can see what's eating your bandwidth

We pair UniFi with SonicWall firewalls at the perimeter. The combination gives our clients Fortune 500 visibility at a small business price point.

If your WiFi coverage has dead spots, if your guest network shares the same subnet as your accounting software, or if you have no idea what's actually on your network — that's a conversation worth having.

If you’re a business owner in Olean, Salamanca, or anywhere in Western New York evaluating your network infrastructure, you’ve probably come across Ubiquiti’s

Once a year isn't enough. Once a quarter is the minimum. Monthly is ideal.

But here's the thing — a 2-hour annual training where someone reads slides in a conference room doesn't work. People forget 90% of it within a week.

What actually works: → Short monthly modules (10–15 minutes) → Simulated phishing tests (send fake phishing emails and see who clicks) → Immediate feedback when someone fails a test → Make it about real examples, not abstract threats

The goal isn't to make people paranoid. It's to build a reflex: when something looks off, pause and verify. That 3-second hesitation prevents 90% of breaches.

A client called last week because their accounting software was crawling. The machine was 8 years old running a spinning hard drive. It had been "fine" for years — until it wasn't.

General rule: replace business workstations every 4–5 years. Laptops closer to 3–4.

It's not just about speed. Older machines can't run current security patches. They fall out of warranty. Parts become unavailable. And the productivity loss from a slow machine costs more than the replacement — you just don't see it on an invoice.

We spec Lenovo and HP for our clients because they're reliable, serviceable, and we can standardize deployment across an entire organization using our provisioning tools.

If your machines still have Windows 10 stickers on them, it's time for a conversation.

How long should a business computer last? It's a question that sounds simple but has real implications for security, productivity, and total cost of ownership.

Hiring a big-city MSP to manage your IT from 300 miles away sounds efficient until your internet goes down and you need someone on-site in an hour.

Rural businesses deserve the same quality of IT that Manhattan gets. But the delivery model has to be different.

What matters in a rural market like ours: → On-site capability. When remote can't fix it, someone needs to drive there. → Understanding of local infrastructure. We know which ISPs actually deliver in Cattaraugus County. We know the power grid is less reliable than Buffalo's. → Relationships with local vendors and contractors. → Realistic expectations about bandwidth and connectivity.

We're not trying to be the biggest MSP. We're trying to be the best MSP for this region. That's a different thing entirely.

Neither. Both. It depends.

Server-only backup is vulnerable to anything that affects your physical location — fire, flood, theft, ransomware that encrypts the backup drive sitting next to the server.

Cloud-only backup is safe from physical disasters but depends entirely on your internet connection and the provider's security.

The right answer is both. Local backup for fast restores (get a file back in minutes), cloud backup for disaster recovery (get everything back if the building burns down).

We use Datto for clients that need instant virtualization — if a server dies, Datto can spin up a virtual copy in minutes. MSP360 for clients where cost matters more and recovery time can be measured in hours instead of minutes.

The question isn't "which is safer." It's "what's your recovery time objective?"

Server Backup vs. Cloud Backup: Why the Question Itself Is Wrong "Should we use server backup or cloud backup?" is a question we hear regularly from business
