After more than 10 years of searching without a single butternut, I’d figured it was hopeless…until literally tripping over a healthy, mature butternut tree.

While out walking with family in mid-September, my 2-year-old took a bad fall, seemingly for no reason. Like one of those comedic slipped on a banana peel cartoon falls. My husband looked down in the grass and ecstatically held up fresh butternut!

This butternut tree had been hiding in plain sight on a path we walked every fall. With a trunk that was 10-12 feet around, the two of us could barely touch hands hugging around it. Butternut trees grow fast in full sun, but nonetheless, that tree had been there a long time.

The Butternut is a beautiful and slow growing shade tree which is hardy in colder climates. This tree produces drooping clusters of sweet nuts which are used in baking and loved by wildlife. Has a distinctive ridged and furrowed bark. Easier to grow than Black Walnut in northern areas. It's a good idea to plant more than one tree for proper pollination. These are hard to find seedlings, but we have them!

BUTTER TREE OVERVIEW
Tylecodon paniculatus is a striking feature plant with its chubby stem and yellow-green paper-like bark. During the winter months, it is covered in long paddle-shaped succulent leaves which are clustered around the growing tip.

Just as the leaves are falling off at the beginning of summer, long reddish-orange flowers appear and attract nectar-loving birds and insects. The largest of the Tylecodons, this caudiciform arborescent succulent can reach heights up to 2 metres. It makes for an excellent feature plant, perfect for rockeries, containers and waterwise gardens.

Tylecodon species are mainly endemic to the dry western parts of South Africa and Namibia where they tend to grow in groups. It thrives in sunny positions in very well-draining, sandy soil medium. They are prone to root and stem rot so be sure to plant it with the neck at soil level with excellent drainage.

Withhold watering in the dormant season (summer) and resume watering in the growing season. Plants can be propagated by seed or cuttings. Its common name 'Butter tree' refers to the smooth, fragible stems. This plant is poisonous to stock.

Butternut grows rapidly on well-drained soils of hillsides and streambanks in mixed hardwood forests. This medium-sized tree is short lived, seldom reaching the age of 75. Butternut is more valued for its nuts than for lumber. The soft, coarse-grained wood works, stains, and finishes well. Small amounts are used for cabinetwork, furniture, and novelties. The sweet nuts are prized as a food by man and animals. Butternut is easily grown but must be transplanted early because of the quickly developing root system.

What is butternut canker? Butternut canker is a fungal disease of Juglans cinerea, the butternut tree (also known as white walnut or oilnut). The disease is thought to have originated outside of the U.S. The first documented case of butternut canker in Wisconsin occurred in 1967. Butternut canker affects butternuts throughout their natural range (much of the eastern US), and has killed up to 80% of the butternut trees in some states. Although butternut canker can occur on saplings of black walnut (Juglans nigra), the effects of the disease on this species are minimal.

Growing Butternut Trees

Butternut, like black walnut trees, are shade intolerant and grow in full sun. They can grow fast under good conditions. The large compound leaves cast dappled shade and turn yellow in the fall. Like most nut trees, they are deep rooted and not easily transplanted. Early farmers planted the nuts near farmhouses for handy fall harvesting. The oily butternuts were used in baking and candy making, especially maple-butternut candy (original butterfingers) famous in New England. Husks were used to make a soft orange/yellow dye for work clothes, and the wood was used in fine cabinetry and later for veneer.
