which is why when you say you WANT to change the world…nothing changes.

lack doesn’t precipitate abundance. neither does scarcity mentality, or playing into hierarchies of any kind…

you know what causes change? decisions.

point. blank. period.

i’ll give you an example. and you know how we do…relationships are everything…so here goes:

imagine someone has caught your eye at (insert fave social gathering place here). oooh chile. they are FINE. they dress well, based on your subjective standards.

you ask around.

they are an upstanding human. they’re smart and funny. they are generous and kind.

all. the. things. on. your. list.

you’re excited. this might just be that soulmate you’ve been longing for…

so you do what any love-loving person would do in the moment when they come across a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity…

you long for them.

that’s it.

no action taken. no love note with check box options. no dm or text. no ‘tell your people to call my people’. no lingering eye contact or wink. no dropping of personal item in obvious and semi-creepy way to see if they’ll help you…NOTHING.

you just spend all day and all night for the rest of your life WISHING y’all could do life together.

WHAT?!? NO…that makes no DAMN SENSE.
you’d DO SOMETHING. right?!

i mean. this is your DREAM?!? and you NEVER thought it would come true?!? and here it is…right in front of your face?!?

we ALL know you would DO SOMETHING…

even the shyest of folx would get their boldest homey to get the digits. am i right?!?

well…same.

social justice. equity in the workplace. opportunities for all folx to lead…all of it.

same. exact. thing.

you can only claim equity as your DREAM for so long before it stops making sense…because opportunities are abundant, but you’re still sitting in the corner waiting to make moves.

so, my question to you is…
are you gonna be about it, or nah?!?

it’s not partnership when it’s one way, and people’s lived experience will always cost more than your college degree ever could have.

think about that the next time you make your payment and want to cry…or you go through the arduous process of TRYING to get loan forgiveness, or think about saying out loud that you got your loans paid off. think about it.

people literally pay for their wisdom, in trauma that keeps getting re-wounded on the daily. and you want them to use that expensive ass wisdom to enlighten you…for zero compensation?!

we know. you trade secrets all the time with people at volunteer events and social gatherings. AND. it’s important to acknowledge and understand that every hour a person without privilege spends with you without pay is EXPONENTIALLY more expensive than your time.

so, stop asking for handouts. expertise costs. and so does time. so pay your partners…and pay them what they’re worth. every time.

and people’s big feels matter. they really do.

that said, if ANYONE’S tears can bring about change, then EVERYONE’S tears can. if that’s not how it works in your organization, you don’t actually have a problem with emotions…you have a problem with equity…

the game can’t change without us being willing to change it. including who can cry their way into disciplinary action WHILE other folx can cry their way into affirmations and flowers…

the work is simple. it’s just not easy.

countless orgs celebrate ‘progress’ and ‘achievements’ when it comes to doing the work…

meanwhile, systemically marginalized folx are experiencing harm real-time.

it’s kind of like attending an awards ceremony for peace and love in the schools…and watching the school bully get student of the year. it doesn’t make sense.

if you KNOW harm is happening and still fix your mouth to cheer for ‘progress’ you’re part of the problem. it’s hard to hear. we know. AND. it’s the best case scenario.

when you are the problem, you have total control over what happens next. and you can be a part of the solution anytime you want.

change doesn’t take time. it takes decisions.
make different ones. today.

being a hypocritical leader isn’t a good look.

organizations across the globe will maximize the opportunity to highlight mental health month WHILE actively traumatizing some of their best teammates. make it make sense.

the reality is that you don’t have to care about DEI if you don’t want to…when you have privilege. you ain’t have to care about oppression, systemic harm, or poverty…especially when that s**t doesn’t exist in your line of sight.

AND.

you don’t have to tell us what you care about. your actions speak much louder than your rhetoric ever will.

mental health month isn’t about pushing EAP programs, making posts about therapy, or giving self-care tips. EAP is dope. it has literally saved lives. therapy, too.

AND.

you can’t hot bath your way out of the long-lasting effects of workplace violence…which is exactly what it is when people with privilege weaponize the system to harm those with none. it’s violence. plain and simple.

the work isn’t easy. AND. it IS simple.

support by creating safe workplaces. for all of us.

training is DOPE. it’s necessary. it’s easy to find. and sometimes, it’s even life-giving…AND.if your entire DEI plan is...

AND.

if your entire DEI plan is a one-and-done training, all you’re doing is checking boxes.

and your people? they’re checking out…

other websites while they smile and nod on zoom…other work they don’t ever have time to finish…other places to work that actually DO the work.

you can’t do the work without people. and the people who beat ubderstand the community you’re serving don’t have time for the bulls**t. they really won’t.

so look beyond training…and build a strategy that can get you moving forward in real ways.

since we were kids, we’ve been trained to be as neat, clean, and tidy as possible.

depending on your generation, there could have ALSO been expectations to leave things better than you found them, be seen and not heard, and never, ever, ever question authority.

breaking these norms was not an option…

and.

today is a new day, my friend. and the capacity and opportunity we have to change the game will REQUIRE questioning EVERYTHING.

including if we can REALLY get where we’re meant to go without shaking some s**t up, and doing the dirty work of getting to the root of the issues we seek to solve.

the fruit reveals the root. always. so, if you’re not harvesting the fruits you long to grow…roll up those sleeves…and let’s try to work!

the right to comfort is inherently exclusionary.

why? because not all of us can even experience comfort. ESPECIALLY at work.

discomfort is part of growth. it’s brain science. it’s human nature. and most of all, it’s necessary when you’ve been breathing in the toxins of harmful culture.

now. you might feel like you can’t breathe at first. it’ll feel like you are gonna die. you could get all sweaty, and antsy, and shifty. you might feel light-headed, or get all self-conscious about saying the right thing. you might even want to disappear.

let me tell you something. and this one is huge.

it’ll pass. AND ALSO. people like me in your workplace feel like that every. single. day.

soooo. you can lean into it…understand it…and then work with your team on how to lessen the overwhelming impact of it…OR…you can sit with the discomfort of knowing you can never unknow, while you do nothing.

life is CHOCK FULL of choices. make yours count.

yep. that’s right. a whole lotta NOTHING…

doing the work isn’t complicated. it’s just not easy. don’t conflate those two…it’s counter-productive, AND harmful AF.

if you REALLY want to bring change into your organization, you have to start with a simple AND effective strategy. and no, thoughts and prayers won’t cut it here either.
