A bat that came into contact with visitors near Staircase Bridge on Aug. 9 has tested positive for rabies.

Anyone who may have had contact with a bat in the area should contact a healthcare provider and their local health department promptly to determine whether treatment is needed. Rabies is a fatal but preventable disease if appropriate medical care is received promptly following an exposure.

Visitors should never touch or handle bats or other wild animals. If you encounter a bat, dead or alive, keep your distance and notify park staff.

By now you've probably seen the news about New World screwworm showing up in Texas. Three calves confirmed positive in South Texas since June 3rd, and it's the first established livestock infestation in the U.S. since the original eradication campaign in the 1960s.

We've been getting questions about what this means for folks up here in Washington and Oregon, so we put together a full breakdown.

The short answer: Washington and Oregon have never had a confirmed screwworm case. Not before eradication, not after. The climate, the distance, and the biology all work in our favor.

🐻 We Had a Visitor This Afternoon!
So this happened right behind our Tumwater office today and we had to share it. A black bear paid us a visit out back, and honestly? Pretty cool wildlife moment. The good news is our honeybees were completely unbothered (smart bear), and the bear moved on without any drama.

If you're in the area, just a heads up to be mindful over the next little while:
🐾 Keep an eye on pets when letting them outside, especially in the early
morning and evening hours

🌻 Bring in or secure any bird feeders, as they're a major attractant for bears

🗑️ Make sure trash cans are secure before putting them out

Bears are naturally curious and generally just passing through looking for an easy meal. As long as we don't give them one, they'll keep moving. We alerted neighbors in the area and wanted to make sure our community had the heads up too.

Because that's what neighbors do. 🐝
