One change that could help your breastfed-to-sleep baby sleep longer stretches? Nix that transfer!

Tbh, I haven't met a baby yet that *loves* to be transferred, and I can't blame them. Falling asleep all warm and cozy in your mom's arms and then find yourself startling awake later on an empty mattress? No, thank you! But for some babies just starting out on the same sleep surface they'll spend the night on makes all the difference. It means less disturbance in that crucial beginning of the night phase, less likelihood of a false start, and greater comfort and confidence going to sleep in their own bed.

If you're using a standard crib this can be tricky obviously - a travel crib with a zip-down side can be a great solution!

Every child is unique and their unique tendencies are there from day 1 — but that doesn't mean you're doomed to broken sleep or crap naps! Some babies need a little extra detective work, but Clara is proof that it's possible to figure out what they need. 🧐

She's 5 now and still loves the consistent routine and gentle transitions and daily quiet time that helped her become a great sleeper in the first place!

Strong sleep foundations aren't going to be impacted by the occasional change in routine. Return to normal expectations with confidence and communication when it's time. And if you like your system and you all get great sleep, NOTHING. NEEDS. TO. CHANGE.

PSA: Sleep trained babies still need co-regulation and nervous system support!

Sleep training is often talked about as teaching kids to "self soothe." While solid routines and sleep hygiene can absolutely help children learn to tune into their bodies and feel confident putting themselves to sleep, it doesn't mean you as the parent disappear from the process.

I am still helping my 5-year-old recognize her limits and take breaks, naps, and rest times when her body and brain need them. I'm still protecting my toddler's afternoons for the nap she almost never wants to take. Part of being a parent is listening to the needs my kids don't always know they have SO THAT they can grow better at listening to their needs as they mature.

If that means setting a limit on how long I stay in their bedroom at night so they can settle down to sleep instead of peppering me with questions or getting distracted? That's listening. That's support. That's co-regulation.

If that means going back into the room because my youngest is struggling and needs extra snuggles before she can calm down for sleep? That's listening. That's support. That's co-regulation.

Sleep training isn't just one thing. Co-regulation isn't just one thing. And they can mesh beautifully.
