I’ve always loved hummingbirds, but they became especially meaningful after my husband Christian’s lung cancer diagnosis. It’s a story that still brings me to tears.
When Christian turned 51, he started worrying about his family’s heart health history. On his interventional cardiologist brother’s advice, he got a heart checkup. His heart was perfect, but the scan revealed something unexpected—a dark spot in his lung. That spot led to a biopsy and a lung cancer diagnosis, a moment that changed everything.
During the agonizing wait for surgery, Christian hung a hummingbird feeder on our deck. We live in Nebraska, so seeing a hummingbird is rare, but that day, one appeared—hovering just two feet in front of him, as if to say, “Live in the moment.” Later that night, we pulled an spirit oracle card—the hummingbird. Its message? Be present. Savor every moment.
From that day on, hummingbirds became our symbol of resilience and presence. They’ve visited us every summer since, filling our hearts with hope.
I’ve been working with an amazing designer (also Sarah!) to rebrand my business and when she surprised me by including a hummingbird in my designs, it felt like the universe was sending a sign—one that I’ll cherish forever. 💚
Swipe to see ’s little winged inspiration for my new logo followed by a baby hummingbird we spotted recently, it’s a male—you can tell by the ruby on his neck. I still can’t believe Christian captured that moment!
