Mosah Fernandez Goodman sits down with Jonah Perlin, Heather Stevenson, and Matt Schwartz on this episode of Hiring Insights.

Three attorneys united by The Legal Mentor Network share a strong commitment to building community through social media, networking, and mentoring. They explore how legal professionals navigate career transitions, leverage mentorship and networking, and embrace nontraditional paths while drawing on diverse experiences to foster meaningful connections and support others in the field.

Highlights from this episode:

Nonlinear career paths can lead to success, and career pivots can open unexpected opportunities. Translating non-legal experience to law helps improve problem-solving, adaptability, and communication.

Leveraging social media for career growth can open doors. Posting insights, answering questions, and engaging online can lead to mentorship opportunities and unexpected career connections.

Authenticity in online presence fosters meaningful connections. Genuine, experience-based content that benefits people reading, builds a personal brand that can attract career opportunities over time.

Strategic networking provides long-term benefits. Some people are natural connectors, while others need to develop relationship-building skills. Building relationships early, especially in law school, pays off over time as professional connections evolve into key decision-makers.

What is The Legal Mentor Network? Mentorship is connecting people who have the relevant experience to people who need the relevant wisdom.

What was your impact?

Anyone reading your resume is looking for results, not generalized descriptions of job duties.

Turn your responsibilities into quantifiable measures of success with numbers: revenue growth, sales volume, cost reduction, timespans, etc.

Utilizing this technique will give someone glancing at your resume memorable accomplishments.

One of the most important features of your LinkedIn profile is your headline (that sentence directly underneath your profile photo).

If you don't create your own headline, it will be defaulted to your current job title and employer.

It's sufficient but adds little value to the algorithm (how you are ranked in searches), especially if you are hoping for more views, more opportunities, or undergoing a career search.

Suggested headline for an experienced jobseeker:

▪️ Clearly state what you do: General Counsel, Chief Financial Officer, Human Resources Director, etc.

▪️ Use keywords relevant to your industry or potential job searches, include specialty areas, and think, what are people typing in the search bar that could set my experiences apart? (Mergers & Acquisitions, Board Member, Environmental, Executive Leader, etc.)

Example: Chief Financial Officer | Investor Relations | Board Member | Executive Leader
