Kelley and Kiewit Collaborate to Bridge Another Gap

Kiewit Infrastructure contacted Kelley to engineer and manufacture a transport system for moving 125 ton bridge girders by rail from a staging location approximately 2 miles from the job site.

The system utilizes a custom superstructure to join 40 and 100 ton rail cars

Key challenges:

- Equalize and transfer girder weight across the rail cars

- Allow rotational freedom to accommodate the curve radius of the rail line.

- Accommodate angular misalignment between the front and rear rail cars.

When Kiewit needed custom equipment to lift and place 80-ton bridge girders, Kelley accepted the challenge.

Key Features:

- 80-ton total lifting capacity (dual 40-ton units)

- 16-foot lift height with a multi-part rope and sheave system

- Integral diesel hydraulic power units (HPUs) for each lift

- Fully proportional remote controls for precise, adjustable travel speeds

- Cost-effective alternative to traditional wire rope hoist systems
