Have you ever seen a candidate register absolute zero support from an entire key demographic?

I have never been impressed with Peter Buttigieg, not even during his time as Mayor. Yet when the numbers dropped showing him at zero percent support among Black men, I was genuinely shocked. Think about that for a moment. Zero percent. Or one hundred percent, for that matter. Both are nearly impossible to achieve in politics or in life. The most ruthless tyrants who would do anything for a vote never reach unanimous support. Even the devil has his worshippers. But zero? That is truly remarkable.

When Bill Maher asked Stephen A. Smith to explain it, Smith did not hesitate. He said it plain: “He doesn’t move us. You gotta be able to move us, bro. He doesn’t move us. You can speculate as to why that is. I’m not going there.”

Those words hit me hard because I feel the exact same way. Buttigieg may be polished, yet he simply does not connect. He does not inspire. He does not move people on a deeper level. And now we are watching a party that proudly assumes it has the Black vote locked down seriously considering him as a major candidate. That level of disconnect goes beyond policy. It reveals a missing common sense about what real leadership requires: the ability to resonate, to stir something authentic in people who are supposed to form your base.

Remember when they added Tim Walz to the ticket thinking he would deliver the masculine vote? The pattern is hard to ignore.

In politics and in business, connection is not optional. Intelligence alone is not enough. You have to move people. You have to earn their trust and stir their belief. Anything less, and even the most favorable assumptions about voter loyalty will crumble.

With the Primary over now, the campaigns will be doing their deep dive to see what went right and what went wrong. There are many lessons to glean from yesterday's election but we think the spotlight will be on the Petersen SoS campaign going forward. State Legislative races will need to tighten up their messaging if they are to remain competitive over the Summer.
