A strong nonprofit board can be one of an organization’s greatest allies, but board engagement does not happen automatically — and it is not built once a year at a retreat.

It takes ongoing attention to three things:

✅The right people
Board members should be invited into roles that match their interests, strengths, and capacity.

✅The right partnership
A strong relationship between the executive director and board president helps create alignment, shared expectations, and momentum.

✅The right process
Thoughtful onboarding, clear goals, and meaningful board meeting moments can help members stay connected to the mission and to each other.

When board members feel engaged, equipped, and valued, they are better prepared to advocate, support fundraising, and help move the organization forward.

From thoughtful board recruitment and meaningful role alignment to strong executive director–board president collaboration and structured onboarding, this guide outlines practical strategies to increase board engagement, improve governance, and strengthen long-term nonprofit leadership success.

Many nonprofits reach mid-year and realize their fundraising has become more reactive than strategic.

The good news? It is not too late to reset.

A strong annual fundraising plan does not need to be complicated. It should help your team clarify priorities, track progress, engage donors consistently, and avoid the cycle of last-minute appeals.

If your organization is asking, “What now?” this guide is a helpful place to start.

When you’re a young nonprofit with a big vision, fundraising can feel overwhelming.

Especially when that vision involves something tangible, visible, and transformational for the people you serve.

That was the challenge facing Imagine Inclusion.

Their goal was ambitious: create an inclusive playground where children of all abilities could play, learn, and connect together.

Like many emerging nonprofits, they had a compelling mission but needed additional funding to move the project forward.

Through grant writing support and fundraising guidance, Imagine Inclusion secured funding that helped bring their vision closer to reality.

One thing we see often is that nonprofit leaders underestimate what is possible because they focus on the size of the project rather than the strength of the mission.

Funders aren’t looking for perfect organizations.

They’re looking for organizations that can clearly communicate:
• The need
• The impact
• The plan

Sometimes the difference between a project staying on the wish list and becoming reality is simply having the right strategy and support in place.

What ambitious project is your organization working toward right now?

Imagine Inclusion Inc collaborated with Strawhecker Nonprofit Services to secure grant funding for an inclusive playground project. SNS's expert grant-writing services helped overcome early fundraising challenges, leading to the successful acquisition of necessary funds and the realization of the pl

💪Strong relationships
🗨️clear communication
🤝engaged leadership

Clear expectations, engaged board leadership, thoughtful communication, and shared accountability all help build trust, both internally and externally.

Complicated systems are not always the answer. More often, organizations benefit most from clarity, consistency, and intentional relationship-building.

A quick gut check for your organization: If someone outside your team looked at your messaging, would they be able to clearly answer:

✅ What problem you’re solving

✅ Why it matters right now

✅ Why your organization is the one to do it

If not, your fundraising will always feel harder than it needs to be. Clarity isn’t just a marketing exercise—it’s what drives results.
