Thanks Patrick Leahy for the tour of First Star Recycling.

First Star employs over 110 people at its Omaha and Lincoln recycling operations and is focused on expanding into to rural communities. The company processes recyclables for businesses and communities throughout the Midwest and markets close to 100,000 tons annually to end users.

Patrick took over as CEO in 2022 and has increased business opportunities by creating products out of hard-to-recycle plastics. The plant we toured transforms plastics into building and industrial materials including lumber, decking, pallets, patio furniture, flatbed trailer decks, and ground mats.

As a farmer I was excited to see First Star recycles big seed tote bags and started to understand there is business potential for rural communities too.

Leahy for Nebraska is hoping to bring new ideas to the Nebraska Legislature and is currently running for State Senator in District 6.

Protect Nebraska from Data Centers.

Massive corporate data centers are being proposed in Nebraska that could use more electricity than entire cities.

While new technologies like artificial intelligence may bring benefits in medicine and agriculture, the current model for building large data centers raises serious concerns for Nebraska communities.

These facilities consume enormous amounts of electricity, water, and land while local residents carry the risks. Projects of this scale could strain Nebraska’s public power system, increase electric bills, impact farmland, and place new pressure on our water resources.

Nebraska’s public power system was built to serve the people of this state. Tech companies should not be allowed to move in, overwhelm our infrastructure, and leave local communities paying the price.

Before projects of this scale move forward, Nebraskans deserve transparency, safeguards, and a real public conversation.

Concerned about the rise of resource draining data centers? You should be. Here is the latest going on in Nebraska from FFP.

Google has privately proposed building a new data center in Nebraska that could require three times the amount of electricity needed to power all of Lincoln during the hottest months of the year, according to documents obtained by the Flatwater Free Press.

The tech giant would power that massive data center — possibly the largest in state history — through a privately built utility-scale natural gas plant potentially capable of producing more power than the largest power plant in the state.

We had a great hearing on LB1028 last week. LB1028 is an act to protect Nebraska's soil and water. Thanks Senator Margo Juarez for working with GC Resolve on this important issue!

We believe farmer led regenerative agriculture practices are key to healthy soil and clean water! It is especially important to be proactive as the volume of waste being produced is growing drastically with Nebraska's aggressive recruitment of Large Concentrated Animal Feed Operation’s (CAFO's).

With the short session it will be tough to move the bill forward, but we hope this common sense approach will be adopted into law soon. We owe it to the next generation of Nebraskans!

ACTION: Senator Dunixi Guereca's LB1200 will be heard in the Health and Human Services Committee this Thursday, February 26th at 1:30 in Room 1510 on the first floor of the State Capitol in Lincoln. Thank you Senator Guereca for bringing this important bill.

LB1200 requires large industrial livestock integrators to prepare and submit an annual disaster mitigation plan to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. The bill focuses on preparedness, communication, and public health protection in the event of infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters, or other major disruptions affecting livestock operations.

The purpose of LB1200 is to improve preparedness by ensuring clear lines of communication before a crisis occurs, not after. It protects workers, neighboring communities, and first responders while supporting faster, more coordinated responses that reduce long-term economic and public health impacts.

This matters because Nebraska has experienced repeated livestock disease outbreaks and natural disasters that strain rural health systems and emergency responders. Large integrators play a central role in these events, yet current law does not require proactive disaster planning or coordination with public health authorities.

Online comments must be submitted by 8:00am Thursday morning.

-Bug infestations or parasites including the New World Screwworm.
-Extreme weather events including flooding and tornadoes.

An industrial integrator is a large corporation that owns and manages an entire livestock supply chain or animals including poultry, hogs, and dairy and feeder cattle, and who controls the entire production process, providing inputs including, but not limited to, feed, veterinary care, antibiotics, vaccines, and genetics, and who also contracts with growers who provide land, barns, and labor, effectively managing the supply chain from farm to market.

Please join us in supporting a more resilient food system and a safer Nebraska!

ACTION: Support the soil and water protection bill for Nebraska!

Senator Margo Juarez's LB1028 will be heard in the Natural Resource Committee on Thursday, February 19th at 1:30 in Room 1023 at the State Capitol in Lincoln. We are grateful Senator Juarez has brought this bill.

The purpose of LB1028 is to create standards for entities classified as Large Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO’s) who apply vast amounts of animal waste for fertilization purposes. The bill will protect Nebraska's water, both underground and above ground (rivers and streams) resources, from increasing contamination issues plaguing our state.

LB1028 is about common-sense protections for water and aquatic life, soil, neighboring landowners and downstream communities, while creating clearer rules and accountability for Large CAFO’s. LB1028 protects Nebraska’s soil and water resources for future generations with proven farming solutions.

If not attending the hearing, please record an official statement with the committee by clicking this link: https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=62879&docnum=LB1028&leg=109, and then click the button that says "Submit Comments Online For LB1028". Online comments must be submitted by 8:00am the day of the hearing.

You can also reach out to the committee members via email citing your reasons for support. Office phone numbers's are also available on the website.

If you would like a larger summary of the bill please message us and we will get you over the information. Please join us in supporting Nebraska's soil and water through proven farming solutions including buffer strips, cover crops, and regenerative agriculture!
