As we celebrate Black Music Month, today we honor the legendary Jimmy Smith, the virtuoso who revolutionized the Hammond B-3 organ and brought it to the forefront of jazz music. Jimmy's innovative flair and electrifying stage presence have made an enduring impression on the music world.

From the 1950s onward, Jimmy Smith's organ mastery became a powerful instrument for jazz expression. His groundbreaking albums, such as "The Sermon!" and "Back at the Chicken Shack," are timeless classics that showcase his unparalleled skill and creativity. Tracks like "The Cat" and "Midnight Special" highlight his ability to blend blues, bebop, and soul, creating a sound that is uniquely his own.

Jimmy's influence extends far beyond jazz; his work has inspired countless musicians including bands such as Medeski, Martin & Wood, and the Beastie Boys, who sampled the bassline from "Root Down (and Get It)" from Root Down—and saluted Smith in the lyrics—for their own hit "Root Down". Smith is seen as a pivotal figure in the evolution of modern music.

Join us in celebrating the incredible legacy of Jimmy Smith.
Stay tuned this month as we continue to honor the trailblazers and icons of Black music. 🎵✨
