Why The Walt Disney Company needs an Indigenous Consultant:
This photo is from a 2022 movie from Pixar and Disney called Turning Red. This movie apparently takes place in Toronto Ontario. This movie is not based on Indigenous People, but from what I have seen from posts that this snippet is pretty unrecognizable unless you’re actively searching for it.

On the Sign it’s states, “Canadian Indigenous People’s History Month”. From what I have seen people seem pretty excited for the representation of this in a movie.

But of course, I will tell you why it’s still keeping us in a very small box the dominant discourse likes to keep Indigenous Persons in 🙃 (and why they so desperately need an Indigenous Consultant).

-WE ARE NOT Canada’s Indigenous People. Canada doesn’t have ownership over Indigenous People. This is something that Indigenous Leadership stated when Treaties were signed and what generations after have been saying.
-This ultimately furthers Indigenous People from Nation to Nation Relationship, and keeps us in a paternalistic role with Canada/US ( and elsewhere). This prevents us from moving forward from reconciliation and Nation to Nation Relationships.
- Because of the influence of Media on Society today. This has officially became a time stamp in History. This means people from all over the world have now confirmed their bias that Canada owns Indigenous People. This keeps Indigenous People stagnant in their attempts to be treated Equally in Canada and elsewhere.
- The lack of consultation that happened with this movie, moves biases that People *think* know more about Indigenous People than Indigenous People. Which furthers us from the humanization process and plays into so many negative stereotypes of Indigenous People.

happy international womxn’s day to all the womxn out there being unapologetically themselves. To those who take up space, allow their voices to be heard, and support other womxn.

To the womxn who are breaking intergenerational trauma cycles, doing the work in private, or don’t talk about past traumas, and those taking care of the home/families/working/etc/all of the above. We see you, you’re valued and the future generations will thank you for healing your bloodlines.

To the womxn from oppressed groups, stand in your power today and everyday, you deserve to take up space, and rise from the box that the dominant society tried to squeeze us in. Be loud, be assertive, have boundaries, and know your worth.

To the males out here, treat the womxn in your life like everyday is international womxn’s day. Tap into your feminine energy. This can look like listening instead of talking, lead with empathy and compassion, be more emotional rather than logical. Allow your feminine energy become balanced with your masculine energy.

What is the implications of not following United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Peoples?

In a lot of professions breach of confidentiality is a fireable offence. One would think that lack of consultation with Indigenous Nations which continuously lead to legal dispute/matters would be a firable offence, as it can be viewed as one’s inability to their job correctly.

Instead, you see the people actually getting promoted because in a “risk management” point of view, this is viewed as one’s job being done efficiently and effectively regardless of the impact it has on Nations. This pattern continues time and time and time and time again and further perpetuates the alienation of Indigenous Nations participation in the global economy.

Risk management in relation to working with Indigenous Nations have not/do not work. Risk management is ultimately costing your business millions of dollars because of the one persons inability to do their job.

Alternatively, we see that a change in perspective, a change in approach, a change in strategy that engages Indigenous Nations as a partner, an investment into healthy relationships with Indigenous Nations allows for the growth and capacity to add immense value and benefit to the economy.

The opportunities are there, they are just waiting for you to get out of your own way.

Signs of Enabling/Caretaking in a professional role:

-doing things for others before they ask you for help because you believe they can’t do it without you.

- saving people from natural consequences of their decisions.

-strategizing & solving issues that are not yours (without the person you’re working with).

-doing things before people have the opportunity to do them on their own.

-handholding instead of empowering.

-making excuses for poor behaviour.

-indulging in poor behaviours because your feel responsible for them and the outcomes.

-helping when it’s not appropriate/when help was not asked.

-creating an environment where they have to keep coming to you for help.

-giving them answers & not showing them how to find the solution on their own.

-doing what people are capable of doing & need to do for themselves.

-speaking for people & not allowing them to speak for themselves. not allowing the people you work with to advocate theirs needs especially if it’s against the work you’re doing.

- not allowing the people you work with the opportunity to grow, and/or have an opinion on the matters of their life and how you’re impacting their lives.

Enabling and/or caregiving behaviours in a professional roles, especially in the helping professions sends the message that we think the people we work with are imcompent and in need of saving when that’s the complete opposite.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but:

Creating dependent relationships is a form of abuse. Allowing a person to fall victim to being dependent on an institution is a form of abuse. Allowing a person to be dependent on your professional role in an institution is a form of abuse.

When a helping professional creates a dependent relationship with a person this ultimately impacts the persons ability to trust themselves and disrespects the persons’ autonomy.

If your professional role would to be dissolved tomorrow, would the people you’re serving be able to function and depend on themselves?

Teach the people you’re working with tangible skills rather than being dependent on a institution, create confidence and autonomy in the people you’re working with.

It’s important for helping professionals to do the work themselves and ensure that they are not being the protagonist in someone else’s story.

In 1923, Cayuga Hereditary Chief Deskeheh went to the League of Nations to petition for Indigenous Rights in Geneva. During this time, Canada, the colony of Great Britain had a seat at the League of Nations as part of the British Colony.

Many of the colonies at this time, accepted Deskeheh petition, Great Britain moved to Stop Deskeheh from speaking as Deskeheh appeared to be an interference in their Domestic Affairs.

Domestically, Canada took further action to stop the assertion of Nationhood.By August 1924, Canada moved quickly to secure an order in council authorizing the change to an Elective form of Government (Ie. Band Council). This political move by the Canadian Government completely erased traditional governance systems given to us by the creator. Also, Canada would not allow Deskeheh to enter back into Canada upon his return from Geneva (he is currently buried in New York).

If your biases align with the idea that Indigenous People took a backseat to the colonization and assimilation of Canada. You couldn't be more wrong. The idea of treaties, was the idea to be "separate, but equal" rather than the parentifcation state we have been met with.

Why we are no longer accepting “Indigenizing Spaces” as a act of Reconciliation.

I want to walk settlers through an imaginary scenario of the reverse of “whitening spaces”. I have included a photo below.

Let’s say you’re walking into your first counselling session. You’re feeling hopeful because this is big step towards your healing journey.

You come into the space, and your instinct is to check out the space. As humans, we subconsciously scan the room to ensure there is no threats of danger. But you see this and you’re uncomfortable.

The counsellor comes and gets your and tells you that your session is going to be in a special room due to your race.

The counslor says to you, “do you like the portrait of the Mona Lisa? She’s one of your people”. You’re speechless, and didn’t reply.

Then the counsellor then goes, “don’t you love the Queen of England? I have roots connecting me to royalty. You have a strange look on your face thinking “wtf does this have to do with me?”.
You counsellor then offers you a drink, depending on what time it is, but it’s definitely reference to the mildly addiction between coffee and wine. You decline because you don’t drink either, the counsellor then looks at your like you got eight heads.

Your session starts. Your cousnellor desperately wants to relatable and make you feel comfortable. Your counsellor starts assuming that you’re vegan, have a crusty white dog, do yoga, drive a mini van, and wear ugly sweaters, and religiously listen to the Beatles & swear they’re the best band ever. Your counsellor also invalidates your experiences by referencing”Don’t worry be happy” or “live laugh love”. And you think to yourself “wtf did I get myself into?”

Think to yourself how does this make you feel? Angry? Happy? Comfortable? Uncomfortable?

If your cannot reverse the experience, then it’s not reconciliation.

Indigenous Nations have a long tradition of making treaties that outlined responsibilities to the land and established agreements based on peace and friendship.

Indigenous leaders dealt with the arrivals go settlers into their territories in the same manner as they dealt with others entering the territory. Indigenous leaders requested that the Crown and its settlers not enter the territory without an agreement.
