Ever wonder why “no” isn’t actually working? Instead of using the go-to No or stop, try giving children specific directions about what you’d like them to do instead. For example, “no hitting” could turn into “Please keep your hands down” or “If you’d like to touch me, I’d be open to a hand hold or a rub on my shoulder”. Just redirecting a toddler to a new behavior is enough to build an understanding of what is expected.

As we head back into the school week, you may notice behavior and mood changes as they put a lot of effort into navigating teacher expectations, new friendships and new learning content at school during the day. This might be especially true for children who have challenges and needs such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorder. Children hold it together all day and then “release” in their safe space. Back-to-School is a time for empathy, grace and reminding each other it’s okay to be exhausted after a day of human interaction.

The first few weeks of school are filled with craziness - adjusting to a new schedule, meeting new teachers, paperwork, and so much more. Building a routine is best when done with intention (what consistency does your family need the most) and once you’ve got a grasp on all the new expectations. We recommend taking a thoughtful look at your routine about week 3 of the new school year and then making meaningful changes to the following week. Pro tip: Make 1-2 changes at a time!

Part of being resilient involves being vulnerable and taking risk; part of taking risk involves failure. Healthy relationships buffer children from the harmful effects of failure and create positive outcomes! When we let children fail and then act as a support agent, it allows them to cultivate adaptability, courage, and most of all resilience!

“Do this, Do that” - do you ever feel like you are barking orders at your child? As caregivers when we feel like broken records, we may need to slow down and think about our daily interactions with children.

Research shows that children develop more language through conversation than direction. Through conversation children will retain more language and build vocabulary. It is also through conversations that children build brain connections. Those connections create a sense of safety which decreases negative behaviors and strengthens the parent-child bond.

Conversational langage may include: story telling, open-ended questions, back and forth exchanges about topics your children are interested in, and describing the environment/situation. These are just a few examples!

With COVID lingering longer than any of us anticipated so does the emotional roller coaster that has come with this experience. Part of staying resilient during this time needs to be a focus on emotional regulation.

Here’s why...

“Emotional regulation is important so we learn how to feel calm and settled. To figure out how to not feel physiologically unstable and uncomfortable and not let our worries take over and feel out of control. Emotional regulation helps reduce the tendency for panic or anxiety or depression and other negative and scary internal experiences and feelings.” -Dr. Melanie Mallers

“Emotion regulation is important for a few reasons. First, it can be uncomfortable or painful to experience strong emotions. Second, it can be uncomfortable or painful for others for you to express strong emotions (so it’s important for social relationships). Third, it is impossible for you to focus on and develop other skills/competencies if your emotions are dysregulated.” -Dr. Kate Bono
