Where do I Belong?

Just about everyone wants to feel like they belong somewhere. As social creatures, we need to be part of a tribe with which we have a deep connection. We all need to feel seen, heard, understood, and experience belongingness.

The need to belong, otherwise known as belongingness, is an emotional desire to associate with and feel accepted by members of a group. Without strong ties to others, our mental and emotional health can suffer. In our collective past, we lived in tribes.

Today, our social tribe can be any number of groups that provide social support, purpose, and shared meaning. Your particular tribe can be your immediate family, but only if the members of your family help you to experience belongingness.

Tribes nowadays tend to be social groups and social networks. They’re groups such as masterminds that help you level up in your personal and professional lives; yoga groups that focus on health and creating community; foodie groups set up to tickle your tastebuds and experience different cuisines; religious organizations that focus on spiritual health and fellowship; nonprofit groups set up to help you make a difference in the world; Toastmasters groups that are organized to help you improve your public speaking abilities; and NLP groups that are created to improve your communication skills and understanding of the human race.

There are many groups in the world to which you can belong. Which tribes stand out to you?

Your inborn personality is like a roadmap that can lead you to your tribe. If you’ve discovered your inborn personality with us, you’re just the person we want to talk to.

You don’t have to belong to a tribe that matches your personality, but it’s often a good idea to find a group of like-minded people with which you can associate. One of the ways to experience fulfillment in life is to find people with which you can share your innermost thoughts and feelings without having to oversimplify your conversations so everyone around you feels included.

For example, if you’re a winter type according to our personality system, you probably don’t want to be in a group where everybody’s overly optimistic and dancing around real issues. Winter types love cold hard facts and enjoy it when people don’t mince words.

If you’re a winter type, you’ll enjoy tribes that are less sensitive and focus on things like science and technology, intellectual discussion, music, art, sci-fi, futurism, psychology, philosophy, astronomy, and the laws of the universe.

InnerShift can teach you the two character traits that are most widely appreciated by everyone and we can teach you specifics on how to best fit in with each individual personality season. Reach out to us for a quote on individual and group sessions at [email protected]

Understanding Your Inborn Personality Can Help You Find Your Calling

Many people in the world fail to work with their biology and therefore never find their calling in life. They don’t know that they have to work with their biology (instead of against it) to head in the right direction.

They’re simply unaware of how to get on the path to a purposeful life. If this sounds like you, we can help you solve this problem. We assist you in looking within yourself, inside your DNA, to discover your built-in purpose.

Your purpose has always been there, but it may have been hidden for years, maybe even decades. Housed within virtually every cell of your body is a genetic code that can act as a treasure map to help you discover important things about yourself so you can know what to do with your life.

Specifically, your genome, which provides you with your inborn personality, can help guide you to success and fulfillment.

It’s a given that DNA is not destiny, but it certainly can show you viable options in this life for your specific inborn personality. Many people don’t often think about the fact that DNA helps create tissue and bones in your body that have a built-in purpose.

For example, all things equal, your genetic code assists in creating a heart with a built-in purpose, a "calling" if you will. Hearts are made to pump blood throughout the body. This is their built-in purpose.

Even the vestigial organs in your body, such as the appendix, seem to serve some purpose, though it may be largely unknown. Most likely, the parts of us that have ambiguous functions must’ve served a greater purpose in the distant past.

Your brain, lungs, bones, skin, etc. all serve important purposes, so it stands to reason that the collective whole of these parts, which create a body, also has a purpose. It just makes logical sense.

If you want to learn more about your purpose and calling in life, contact us today at [email protected] to set up a session with us. We look forward to hearing from you!

Can I permanently change my personality type by forming good habits?

Some of our clients have asked us if it’s possible to permanently change their inborn personalities by forming good habits.

This is a great question because it’s important to know what you can realistically change about yourself in this life.

You’re born into this world with a unique personality type. A large part of your inborn personality comes from your DNA.

You can alter and modify your personality because it’s malleable. However, it’s virtually impossible to drastically change your inborn personality because to do so you’d have to alter your DNA.

All things equal, it’s not currently possible to merely form good habits to drastically change the personality aspects of your DNA.

For example, if you were born an inhibited introvert and behaved like an uninhibited extrovert for a year, you wouldn’t all of a sudden become a natural extrovert.

We’ve never heard of anyone who’s been able to alter their double helix by behavioral changes alone. Research on this topic corroborates our findings.

This is not to say that you can’t drastically change your life. You absolutely can change your life in drastic ways.

However, the changes you can expect won’t typically be connected to the genetic aspects of your inborn personality.

For instance, if you were born a shy introvert, you can learn to be brave in social situations and behave in outgoing ways when you need to, but you won’t become a natural uninhibited extrovert.

The same is true for uninhibited extroverts. With self-discipline, very loud and talkative people can learn to be quiet when appropriate, but they don’t become inhibited introverts.

They aren’t doomed to always speak over others because of their genetics and yet they won’t become inhibited introverts because of behavioral changes.

If you’re someone who confuses their habits with their inborn personality type, you’re not alone. Each day, millions of people do this very thing.

It’s commonplace to find naturally spontaneous individuals who trick themselves into believing that they’re naturally on top of things because their current job requires them to be conscientious.

It’s normal for people to form habits and feel like they’ve completely changed their personality type in the process. However, it’s not what is really happening.

Our prewired inborn personality traits provide us with a choice: we can either work with them or against them.

Remember when you were 13 years old and thought it would be fun to have a boyfriend or girlfriend? What traits did you look for in your prospective steady?

At that age, chances are you made your decision based on looks! Maybe it was their eyes, their hair, or smile that made your heart beat a little faster.

But how many people end up marrying their first puppy-love from 8th grade?

With experience, you learn relationships require more than physical attraction.

There are a lot of variables involved that can increase or decrease compatibility and fulfillment in a relationship.

Some of these variables are called lifestyle requirements and it's important that couples are aware of them.

One lifestyle requirement is your tolerance for uncertainty.

People who can handle a lot of uncertainty may choose to be an entrepreneur, work for commissions only, or have an unconventional career to earn a living.

Those with a low tolerance for uncertainty would be incredibly stressed with those career options and would likely choose a conventional job with a larger company that provides a consistent paycheck and health insurance.

If a couple is on the opposite side of the "uncertainty" spectrum, it could make for some difficult times for either partner.

At InnerShift, there is a range of lifestyle requirements that we share with couples.

By knowing where you and your partner differ, you can actively make decisions and compromise to reduce the stress and clash that result from these differences.

Do you know your own lifestyle requirements and those of your significant other?

We would be happy to review them with both of you and provide an opportunity to learn more about yourselves and what helps you to be happy and fulfilled.

Science is learning that our faces tell us a lot about our genetics. Facial recognition software is being used to analyze the face to determine if a person has a genetic disorder.

The program looks for distinct facial features that are consistent with a specific genetic defect.

For example, if your child is born with Smith-Magenis syndrome, which affects 1 in 25,000 individuals, the software will recognize the common physical traits of the syndrome, which include a flat bridge of the nose and an uplifted upper lip.

A more common condition in boys is the Fragile X syndrome, which affects 1 in 4,000 boys. This syndrome causes learning disabilities and behavioral symptoms like those of Autism.

Diagnosing these syndromes as early as possible is very important for the parents to know.

The physical patterns associated with the syndrome may not be detectable to the visible eye in young boys, but the software can detect the subtle differences in the facial features because the physical features are always consistent with the syndrome.

Are you able to recognize an individual with Down syndrome? There are physical features of the face, eyes, and body that are consistent.

Some of the features include a flattened facial profile and nose, a small head, ears, and mouth, and upward slanting eyes, often with a skin fold that comes out from the upper eyelid that covers the inner corner of the eye.

There is a consistent correlation between the genetic defect and the physical features of one who has the defect.

In the same way, there are physical features that always correlate to the same genetic personality traits.

We believe that one day the physical features recognized by Paulos Typology to determine personality traits will be coded into a facial recognition software program.

The method of recognizing physical features that always correlate to specific genetic defects would be the exact same method used to recognize other physical features that always correlate to specific personality traits.

Is having your personality typed ever a bad thing?

Some people contend that giving people personality types is a bad thing. They may say, “I don’t like to be put into a box” or “I don’t believe humans can be typed.” They believe that everyone doesn’t fit into categories.

These types of people (pun intended) think that receiving a personality type is akin to accepting limitations for one’s self, which they believe is inherently “bad.” Are they right?

Does a personality assessment take away life opportunities or is it your own DNA and life choices that are both limiting and enhancing your life? Could it be that personality typology is merely a way to identify and classify human patterns that exist outside of any labels we create?

Here’s some food for thought to come to your own conclusion on the matter. You were born with a specific blood type whether you believe in them or not.

Does this label limit you or were you born with a specific blood type? Can you become another blood type just because you want to?

Currently, it’s not possible to change your blood type with will power and good habits. In normal circumstances, you’re born with a blood type and die with that same blood type. It’s extremely rare to change the blood type with which you were born.

Personality types are similar to blood types in that they organize some of our inborn characteristics. When used properly, personality typing can result in many positive outcomes.

For example, it can reveal compatibility with a potential mate. It can also help people with career selection, self-actualization, and self-transcendence.

Knowing more about your inborn preferences and proclivities can bring about more fulfillment and happiness in life.

Having your personality typed incorrectly is a bad thing. It’s our desire at InnerShift to type people responsibly, accurately, and with wisdom so that all who use our services will be able to enhance their lives.

Before Alex Paulos created Paulos Personality Typology, he studied the work of Paul Ekman, an American psychologist, and pioneer in the study of emotions and their relationship to facial expressions.

Ekman and his team surprised the world when they discovered that everyone uses the same facial muscles when expressing certain kinds of emotions.

For example, when we’re truly happy we smile a real smile (also known as a Duchenne smile) that involves specific muscles that lift the corners of our mouth and another set of muscles that raise your cheeks.

It was Ekman’s work with the human face that allowed Paulos to get a glimpse of the connection between people’s faces and their inborn personalities.

After studying Ekman’s work, Paulos hypothesized that if the expression of emotions is universal (In other words, everyone expresses emotions in the same kinds of ways), then people’s inborn personalities could also be universal.

He thought that if people’s inborn personality traits were universal, then they’d be biological in nature and recognizable, just like happiness is recognized with a real smile and sadness is recognized with a frowny face.

Find out for yourself if inborn personalities are universal and discover some of the ways to recognize them.

We use our understanding of universal inborn personalities to help you with your communication patterns, relationship compatibility, issues in your business, and overall fulfillment in life.

People tend to fall into one of three categories of those who lie.

First, there are those who are in the habit of lying to themselves and others with no intention to deceive or to harm those to whom they lie. These are people who convince themselves that they are organized, but in reality are always late and their room is always a mess. Many times, what these people tell you is how they want to be seen, not who they really are.

Second, there are individuals who blatantly tell lies in order to deceive or harm those to whom they lie. These are the kinds of people who tell others that they are rich so people will rub shoulders with them, do business with them, or even want to date/marry them.

Third, there are those who tell lies, but then the lies they tell become truths via self-fulfilling prophecy. These types of individuals, for example, claim to be company executives, when in reality they hold a middle management position. To make sure these lies become the truth, these types of people will work very hard to become a company executive to justify their initial lie.

How accurate would the results be if these three groups of people were to take a personality self-assessment test?

When we choose to be vulnerable and accept being less than perfect, the pressure to lie goes away. Would you prefer to be with imperfect people with good intentions or with people who make themselves appear to be more perfect than they really are? If we want to be more likable, we need to act and speak as we truly are.

The Fear of not wanting to offend a loved one:

There are times when parents lovingly—and other times selfishly—influence their children to take a specific approach to their education and careers. If they’re not careful, parents can push their children into disciplines for which they have no natural aptitude nor desire.

Not long ago, I was typing the personality of a 30-year-old mother. I said that her inborn type was that of a very creative, artful, free spirit. She gasped and said, “You are so right. I am all of those things, but I am not doing any of those things.” She went on to say that her father had convinced her to be a computer programmer. He wanted her to have stability in her life, and she had done what he’d asked her to do.

Unfortunately, this type of job had been causing her to fight against her natural inborn talents and propensities, forcing her to play her "benchwarmer" traits every day.
The work environment for this type of job has caused her vast amounts of stress. She’s conflicted about the possibility of becoming a manager since she doesn't like telling people what to do and shrinks at the thought of having to intervene in work-related disputes.

This woman sacrificed her happiness to her father’s preferences because she didn’t want to disappoint him and feared offending him. She now realizes that she would rather pursue her artistic abilities even if it meant making less money. Of course, her father loves her very much and wanted to do what was best for his daughter. Nevertheless, he didn’t know or understand her inborn personality and the personal repercussions she would face by becoming a programmer.

When we typed this woman and she began to awaken to her true self, she had to make an important choice. She could either continue down the same path or blaze a new one that would be more in line with her inborn personality, natural talents, and gifts. There are obviously many things to consider when making this kind of decision. For a 30-year-old with a family and a fairly lucrative career, the stakes are relatively high. Her potential choice to self-actualize would certainly require sacrifices.

The sooner we know our true selves in life, the better. This way, we can start investing early in skills that will benefit us. We can get an early jump on positioning ourselves in contexts that will allow our inborn personalities to be assets more often than liabilities. However, no matter what your age, there is more to be gained by learning the truth than by living in ignorance and self-deception.

Can you think of a time when you allowed the fear of disappointing or offending a loved one to get you to pretend to be someone else and act against your inborn preferences? How did it make you feel and what were the consequences? I encourage you to muster the confidence and strength to know who you are, express who you are, and live true to yourself.

12/09/2020

Do you remember watching American Idol? Do you remember watching the people who sang off-key and were obviously tone deaf? The most fascinating thing was that these people actually thought they were excellent singers. They completely lacked self-awareness and insight into their singing ability - or lack thereof - which prevented them from recognizing their ineptitude. Even harsh critiques from the judges could not change their overwhelmingly positive views of their skills.

A distorted “self-concept”, or way of viewing yourself, is an image of oneself that fails to be objectively true. It can lead you to seriously under- or overestimate your own abilities. Individuals who distort the way they see themselves can unknowingly create lasting negative implications for their health and their psychological and emotional development.

According to parapsychologist Dr. Keith Harary, “Extensive research has . . . confirmed that the way in which you see yourself . . . has crucial implications for your long-term personal development and mental health.” Your self-concept has a profound impact on many aspects of your life. Along with the benefit of avoiding American Idol-esque ridicule, this is one of the reasons why it is important to see yourself without distortion.

We all know plenty of people who have unrealistic views of their own skills or behavior and don’t know it. Mounting evidence suggests that people are often poor at estimating their own skill or competence in various domains ranging from logical reasoning to sense of humor. Put another way, people often believe they are smarter, funnier, more beautiful, and more successful than they really are.

If people whose self-images are distorted are oblivious to this fact, how will they ever know? Do you have a distorted self-concept? How do you know? This kind of distortion is something you are unlikely to detect.

At InnerShift, we encourage you to learn who you are and live accordingly.
