Where do I Belong?
Just about everyone wants to feel like they belong somewhere. As social creatures, we need to be part of a tribe with which we have a deep connection. We all need to feel seen, heard, understood, and experience belongingness.
The need to belong, otherwise known as belongingness, is an emotional desire to associate with and feel accepted by members of a group. Without strong ties to others, our mental and emotional health can suffer. In our collective past, we lived in tribes.
Today, our social tribe can be any number of groups that provide social support, purpose, and shared meaning. Your particular tribe can be your immediate family, but only if the members of your family help you to experience belongingness.
Tribes nowadays tend to be social groups and social networks. They’re groups such as masterminds that help you level up in your personal and professional lives; yoga groups that focus on health and creating community; foodie groups set up to tickle your tastebuds and experience different cuisines; religious organizations that focus on spiritual health and fellowship; nonprofit groups set up to help you make a difference in the world; Toastmasters groups that are organized to help you improve your public speaking abilities; and NLP groups that are created to improve your communication skills and understanding of the human race.
There are many groups in the world to which you can belong. Which tribes stand out to you?
Your inborn personality is like a roadmap that can lead you to your tribe. If you’ve discovered your inborn personality with us, you’re just the person we want to talk to.
You don’t have to belong to a tribe that matches your personality, but it’s often a good idea to find a group of like-minded people with which you can associate. One of the ways to experience fulfillment in life is to find people with which you can share your innermost thoughts and feelings without having to oversimplify your conversations so everyone around you feels included.
For example, if you’re a winter type according to our personality system, you probably don’t want to be in a group where everybody’s overly optimistic and dancing around real issues. Winter types love cold hard facts and enjoy it when people don’t mince words.
If you’re a winter type, you’ll enjoy tribes that are less sensitive and focus on things like science and technology, intellectual discussion, music, art, sci-fi, futurism, psychology, philosophy, astronomy, and the laws of the universe.
