Stevens suffered the same outcome as many of his previous clients; denied credit applications because of a lack of credit history and closed accounts. He then began working in the Mortgage Department as a Loan Officer and later as a Branch Manager from 2006 to 2008. While working in this industry, he realized that there was a real need to help educate people on how credit works by establishing, using, and building credit. Stevens believes, “In our education system and in some homes, financial literacy has not been taught. For me, there are two things that you must safeguard: first, your reputation, and second, your creditworthiness. During his career in banking, most of his clients were high-risk people who had a credit score between 500 and 620, which had errors in their credit reports. Stevens took it upon himself to study each case carefully and discovered errors in personal information, or inaccurate account details that had a negative impact on the credit scores. He had to turn down approximately 70 percent of the loan applications that came into his hands. Frustrated at seeing constant reporting errors. Stevens recalls, “Frequently, my mortgage supervisor asked me “Stop, trying to fix those credit reports, the lower their scores are, the higher interest they will have, dedicate yourself to processing those applications and close them." and by the way, that business collapsed.
“Wow, that hurt to hear. I thought to myself, I could be one of them, well I was one of them. I was a victim of the same outcome.”
Stevens put all his efforts into successfully helping people correct their credit reports to get approved for their loans. During many years of working in the banking industry, Stevens developed a passion and gratification for educating and helping others to establish solid credit history and creditworthiness.
