HARD skills vs SOFT skills…what?! 🧐

Executives and corporations are seeing the shift..Soft skills are no longer optional in business. They’re operational assets.

One of the greatest takeaways from working within large corporate environments is witnessing the shift happening right before our eyes.

For decades, corporations were built almost exclusively around hard skills:
degrees, certifications, technical knowledge, business management experience, and strict operational structure.

And while those things absolutely still matter, and are still a core part of what I bring to the table, they are no longer the only thing that matters.

Today’s executives are looking for something deeper!

They want professionals who not only understand operations, systems, workflows, communication platforms, business structure, and executive-level ex*****on…

but who also bring emotional intelligence, adaptability, strategic communication, critical thinking, and confidence under pressure.

Because one of the biggest frustrations leaders are facing today is not always the lack of technical ability.

It’s the lack of trust in decision-making.
Let me explain…

Executives are exhausted from having to answer every small question, re-explain priorities, or micromanage professionals who lack confidence, communication skills, initiative, or business intuition.

They want a right-hand person who can:
• anticipate needs
• analyze situations independently
• de-escalate problems
• communicate effectively
• protect relationships
• stabilize operations
• think critically under pressure
• execute with professionalism and discretion

The reality is:
hard skills may get someone hired…

but soft skills are often what determine whether someone truly thrives in executive support.

Because soft skills cannot fully be taught through a degree, a certification, or even years of experience alone.

As someone building a business in 2026, these comments honestly made me a little sad…

People looked at one photo without knowing the job description, resumes, experience, personalities, values, or stories and immediately assigned identities, intelligence levels, motives, and character traits.

And boy did the comments FAIL…😔

One woman is “focused.” One “likes attention.” One “looks more professional.” Based on what… a folder color? Glasses? Hair? Crossed legs?

Years ago, a tailored suit and a certain look may have defined “professional.” Today, even executive spaces are evolving. Many businesses now value authenticity, experience, emotional intelligence, adaptability, and results just as much as presentation.

Now for a different question: Can you identify the person who may be struggling with addiction? The one grieving the loss of a partner? The one who graduated at the top of their class with a Master’s degree? Or the one returning to the workforce after years as a stay-at-home parent?

You probably can’t…and that’s the point.

The conversation shouldn’t be “Who gets the job?” It should be: “Why did we assume we knew them at all?”
