๐Ÿ“ In this newest episode, I had a wonderful discussion with expert Irina Yashkova on the intricacies of communicating and building trusting relationships with Russians.

๐Ÿ’ก It was fascinating to hear about the specifics of and alongside other topics and I am always engrossed in hearing the ways communication varies across cultures.

๐Ÿ“ As a precautionary measure, I wanted to preface the discussion with an awareness message to clarify my stance.

I firmly believe that a significant proportion of disputes that end up in court could be avoided if effective listening were employed.

This is particularly relevant for multicultural teams where the same principle applies. Empathetic listening is often neglected, leading to conflicts that could have been prevented.

The question is: How can one achieve effective cross-cultural listening if not familiar with the communication and listening styles of each culture involved?

This is when training in the subject matter is required.

Do you ever find yourself forgetting the name of someone you were introduced to at a networking event or lunch meeting? If so, you're not alone. Most studies suggest that the average person only remembers between 25% to 50% of what they hear, making it likely that your boss, colleagues, or customers...

Have you ever thought about how you construct your own perspectives?

As someone who speaks on Unconscious Bias and is constantly working to combat my own, I find that many thoughts or choices people believe are original to them, are often influenced by the cultural experiences they have had.

๐Ÿ“ Perspectives about certain people, groups, regions, and other areas of the world are influenced by what we experience through the people we surround ourselves with, and by what we see through the media and other cultural outlets. Very few thoughts are ever our own.

๐Ÿ“š Surrounding ourselves with those whose viewpoints or experiences differ from our own is just one way to combat unconscious bias and work toward understanding more perspectives at a deeper level.

๐ŸŒ In this next podcast episode, we will be talking with Kristen U. to see an American perspective on a region that is often looked at through a lens associated with conflict and hardships, as well as ways we can work to expand our worldviews.

๐ŸŒ According to World Business Culture, Germany is ranked 20th by the World Bank for ease of doing business in the country, and 25th in the Index of Economic Freedom.

๐Ÿ“ Germany has a prosperous and innovative economy with a large consumer market, and as with all countries, the key to being effective when doing business in Germany is to understand the people and culture.

๐ŸŽฏ More than that, the ways in which their culture impacts their business practices. Simply knowing about, or being exposed to a culture, will not prepare you for conducting business with them.

๐Ÿ“ In our newest podcast episode, expert Dr. Claudia Beier was courteous enough to discuss the German culture to better your communication and business practices.

had a wonderful conversation with Dr. Claudia Beier on doing business with Germans, which will be available tomorrow.

There is however, a slight confusion when we hear Dutch and Deutche.

โ€œDutchโ€ is the English term for Netherlands ( Holland, or Low country) which indicates a person/thing from the ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ.

โ€œ Deutcheโ€, however, is the German term for โ€œ Germanโ€ which is derived from the word of the country โ€œ Deutschlandโ€.

Until about the 17th Century , โ€œ Dutchโ€ referred to all Germanic speaking areas on the continent South of Scandinavia. This is the origin of the term โ€œ Pennsylvania Dutchโ€ who were actually German immigrants to the ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

If British texts from 1670 referred to someone as a โ€œ Dutch merchant โ€œ, that person could be Dutch, Flemish, German, Swiss, or Austria.

In English usage, Dutch eventually evolved to only mean the people and the language of Holland/ Netherlands which is also spoken in some parts of Belgium.

Another point of separation is that Germans were influenced by the Lutheran school of thoughts while the Dutch preferred the Calvinist one.

If you are Dutch or German, please feel free to add to this.

Cool stuff- Weโ€™re always learning and evolving.

Today is Valentineโ€™s Day, and it is time for not only expressing love but reflecting on how it is displayed.

Growing up, I was part of a family that didnโ€™t express their love through words. Despite this, my parents provided a home filled with joy and celebration. Love was always present, even if it wasnโ€™t verbally expressed.

Since culture is an invisible force, I had always assumed my own cultureโ€™s customs were the norm. However, when I started interacting with people of different backgrounds, I realized that love is a shared experience, but its form of expression is unique to each culture. My conclusion of this was further strengthened after closely observing how clients from over 127 different nationalities expressed their love emotions.

So letโ€™s embark on a global tour to discover how people from different cultures express their ๐Ÿ’•.

In linear -Active cultures ( Western world), love is often expressed through tangible acts of service and generosity such as cooking a meal for a loved one, giving gifts, spending quality time . Love is also expressed through physical acts, words of affirmation, encouragement, and gratitude.

In Multi-Active cultures ( Arabic speaking countries, Latin America, Africa, and part of Europe) and depending on the specific belief and values of the culture, love is expressed through acts of service and hospitality ( Communalism), or through acts of charity and support (Social responsibility). Others may express it through physical gestures and acts of kindness.

In reactive cultures ( Much of Asia excluding India & Pakistan) love is generally expressed through both verbal and non verbal communication with all its forms including gifts and tokens of appreciation.

Love is universal, but its expression is local.

I found that the best way to show love to others is to love yourself first. If you canโ€™t love yourself, it will be difficult to share it with others. As the Arabic proverb goes, โ€œ You can not give what you do not have.โ€

Love is a powerful emotion that can make us feel happy, fulfilled, and connected.

If you work across cultures, this is one area you need to be aware of.

How is love expressed in your side of the world ?

Wishing you a very happy Valentineโ€™s Day!
May it be filled with love and joy ๐Ÿคฉ
