Meet Jody Layne. 👋

Strategist. Cheerleader. Straight-talker. Problem-solver. And professional multitaskiplifier.

Jody has been in the business and marketing world for decades, but she doesn’t just talk strategy from the sidelines. She spent eight years inside a hormone clinic, stepping into nearly every role and seeing firsthand where practices get stuck, where systems break down, and what actually moves the needle.

Her approach?

Start with the life you want. Then build the business around it.

Because bigger isn’t always better. More patients, more employees, and more revenue mean very little if you’ve built a business you can’t step away from.

Jody helps clinic owners create the strategy, systems, and team they need to grow with intention, without losing themselves in the process.

And if there’s a complicated problem with 17 moving parts?

That’s probably where she’s having the most fun. 😉

Your business should support the life you want, not the other way around.

You might not have a marketing problem.

You might have a decision problem.

You say you want a bigger practice, but have you actually decided what that means?

What revenue do you want?
What does your team look like?
What do you want your schedule to look like?
What should still depend on you a year from now?

Once you get clear on the destination, you can see what has to change to get there.

Your pricing. Your processes. Your team. Your systems. Your role as the owner.

And then comes the part nobody puts on Instagram: staying with it when the results are slower than you expected.

Building a practice that actually works takes more than wanting it badly. It takes clear decisions, strong infrastructure, and the discipline to keep building.

What’s one decision you know you need to make in your practice?

And if you haven’t listened yet, this week’s Thursday episode goes deeper into the three reasons most providers never build the practice they say they want.

Listen to the full episode and then ask yourself: which one are you guilty of?

Some of the hardest lessons in business are the ones you can’t see from the outside.

You see the following.
The revenue.
The full schedule.
The success story.

You don’t see the three years it took to get there.

That conversation got me thinking about how easily we compare our current chapter to someone else’s highlight reel, especially when we’re building a practice.

So I went deeper on the latest episode of Beyond Hormones.

Three decisions. Three patterns. And a few uncomfortable truths about what may actually be keeping your practice from becoming what you want it to be.

I told a health business coach he could keep his podcast answer to himself... and then he told me about his first three years in business anyway.

He's got hundreds of thousands of followers now. Helped thousands of clinics. Made millions. And his first three years? Under the poverty line. Nobody posts that part. Everybody posts the after.

That's what got me thinking about why most providers never actually build the practice they picture for themselves — and it's not the market, it's not competition, it's not bad luck. It's three decisions most of us are making right now without even realizing it.

I recorded a solo episode about it this week, and I didn't soften it. If you've ever felt like you're spinning your wheels while everyone else "figures it out," this one's for you — and it might sting a little. That's on purpose.

If you're a hormone clinic owner, do yourself a favor and actually sit with this one instead of half-listening while you fold laundry. I promise you'll see yourself in at least one of the three reasons.

She used to do it all herself.

The scheduling. The discovery calls. The business decisions. And, as she’ll openly admit, figuring out the numbers and systems along the way.

Fifteen years later, Dr. Aimee Duffy has built a thriving cash-based practice with a team that can run the business without everything depending on her.

And that shift is a big part of what makes this episode so valuable.

Because at some point, growth requires you to stop being the person everything runs through.

In this episode of Beyond Hormones, Aimee shares how she built systems around patient plans, moved discovery calls to a trained team member, and created a nurture sequence that is still bringing in patients years later.

No fluff. Just the lessons, mistakes, and systems that helped her build a practice that doesn't require her to do everything herself.

What if your marketing budget wasn’t actually a budget?

Instead of starting with, “How much can we afford to spend on marketing?” start with:

“What do we want to make, and what needs to happen to get there?”

That shift changes the conversation.

Because the goal isn’t to find the cheapest lead or spend as little as possible. It’s to understand what produces a strong return, then build the systems and capacity to support more of it.

If $100K in marketing produces $200K in revenue, the question isn’t whether you should spend more.

It’s whether your business is ready to handle the growth.

If you've been in hormone medicine for any length of time, you know the name Dr. Neal Rouzier.

For over thirty years, he's been one of the true pioneers of hormone replacement therapy — treating patients, researching protocols, and writing the book that so many of us learned from. He doesn't just practice this. He's spent his career teaching it, lecturing all over the world so providers like you and me actually understand the literature behind what we're doing, not just the protocol on the page.

There's a reason his courses are some of the most respected in this industry. He's trained more providers in bioidentical hormone therapy than almost anyone I can think of.

And now, he's sitting down with me on Beyond Hormones, The Business of Wellness.

Here's what makes this different: you don't just get to listen. You get to ask him something yourself. Whatever question you've been sitting on — about protocols, about dosing, about the thing you and your colleagues can't agree on — send it to me, and I will put it directly to him, on the show.

Comment or send me a DM with your question and make sure to let me know whether you want me to use your name or keep you anonymous.

We're recording September 15th. It goes live September 21st. Don't miss your chance to ask a legend in this field a question, directly.

Fifteen years ago, Dr. Aimee Duffy had an office manager who didn't know what he was doing, business and personal credit cards getting mixed together, and no real idea what her numbers actually looked like. It caused a financial mess that took years to untangle.

Today she runs Carolina Integrative Medicine in Clemson, South Carolina, a thriving cash-based practice, and she trains providers across the country on how to build the same kind of business.

The line that stuck with me most: "The sooner you get out of it yourself as a provider, the better your systems are gonna work." She's talking about discovery calls specifically, but honestly it applies to almost everything she said.

In this episode, Aimee breaks down her good-better-best framework for patient plans, why her discovery calls are run by a trained team member and not her, and the exact nurturing sequence that's still converting patients from a webinar they watched two years ago.

I don't say this about every guest, but Aimee is one of the most refreshingly honest, no-fluff business minds I've had on this show. If you've ever felt like the clinical side of your practice is dialed in but the business side is a mess, you need to hear this one.

Growth isn’t just about making more money.

It’s about becoming visible enough for the right people to find you.

If you have the expertise, experience, and ability to help more patients, staying small doesn’t just limit your business. It limits your reach.

That’s why business growth isn’t separate from the work you do. It’s part of your responsibility as a practice owner.

Get better at the business, and you create more opportunities to make an impact.

More leads doesn’t always mean more growth.

And a lower cost per lead doesn’t automatically mean better marketing.

For practice owners, the numbers that matter are the ones that connect marketing to the actual health of the business: patient acquisition cost, patient value, cash flow, and return on investment.

A campaign can look “expensive” on the surface and still be highly profitable.

The better question isn’t always:

“How do I get more leads for less?”

It’s:

“Is this acquisition model profitable enough to scale?”

That shift in perspective can change how you approach your entire growth strategy.

Here’s what practice owners should be measuring instead.
