21 generations of winemaking is a huge honor for one family 🍷. But to also be the family that started traditional method sparkling wine in Spain is equally incredible!

This week on the podcast show I had the great honor to speak with Pepe Raventos of Raventos I Blanc winery. Pepe is the Great Great Grandson of Don Jose Raventos, who was the first Spaniard to make sparkling wine in the traditional champagne method.

Pepe continues this tradition by making amazing wines in Penedes, educating others about sustainability in the region, and advocating for the native grapes in his home region. We had an awesome discussion about the challenges in the Cava DO, why Xarello is such an incredible grape, what to expect from Penedes region in the future, and so much more! What would you do if you were a 27 year old heir to a major textile business, but you find yourself widowed and a single mother?

Well Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot decided to take a chance and risk everything by leaving textile and building a wine business. This was a crazy business move in the late 1700s when the champagne region was not yet known for its sparkling wines, but Barbe’s hard work would pay off in building the foundation of one of the world’s largest and most known champagne houses, V***e Cliquot.

“V***e” means widow in French and in the New York Times Bestseller “The Widow Clicquot”, Tilar Mazzeo does a fabulous job walking you through Barbe’s life, the political and economic turmoil of the Napoleonic Era in France, and the impact Barbe would have on other women in Champagne and the rest of the wine world. 🥂
