“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. Ephesians 1:3-4 NIV

As we prepare for and celebrate Father’s Day, I consider how God, our Father, looks at us, and looks at what posture He takes when we come to Him in prayer. For those of us who are fathers, let’s consider how we react and what posture we take toward our child(ren) —-not only when they come to us with requests —- but how we respond to them in our daily lives. Do we have a relationship with them? Have we told them that we love them? Do we go to God only when we are in trouble, or when we are in need or want? Is He an afterthought until a situation arises and we feel we can’t handle it? Is it only then that we remember that we have a father who can do all things? But what if we haven’t spoken to Him in quite a while? Do we still, expect that He will provide and protect? That He will be there when we call?

But do we praise and worship Him because of who He is and what He’s done and can do for us? Consider how we would respond to our child(ren) if they treated us in this manner. Would we still have unconditional love for them? Would we still listen to their cries for help and direction when they called to us —- even when they didn’t consult or speak with us before they embarked upon their journey? It is important for us to praise and thank our Heavenly Father, just as we would like to be praised and thanked by our earthly child(ren). This requires us as Fathers to love our child(ren) as our Father loves us. For us to live our life with dignity and character so that we can be an example. Our Heavenly Father has told us, He would never leave us, nor forsake us. That He would love us always. So let us be there for our child(ren). Let us walk with dignity and character. On this Father’s Day, let us take care to thank and honor our earthly and Heavenly Fathers just as we would like to be thanked and honored by our child(ren): thank you, Lord; thank you, Dad, you’re the best.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul: And all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all his benefits. Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who health all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; Who crowneth thee with lovingkindnesss and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; So that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalms 103:1-5 KJV

Today is a special day for me; a day to give thanks and praise to God for another day, another year, another blessing. As I look back over my life, I can see God’s hand in my life and the many blessings God has given. No, everyday has not been easy and everything has not gone the way that I hoped and planned. But God has been there, and for that, I am thankful. There have been and there will continue to be disappointments, trials, battles and difficulties. But although there are still mountains to climb and hills to cross, God is with me and continues to bless me. Through it all I am thankful for another day, another year, another blessing.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature, complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4 NIV

We all experience trying times, limitations, irritations, tribulations, inconveniences and more. These are common to us all and we like none of it. But God allows these things to be to mature us. He wants us to be grown Christians, not like a little child. You’ve heard the saying…’our trials come to make us strong’. The trials of life usually makes us wait. Imagine if you will, a child. Children hate waiting. Children do not know the difference between ‘no’ and ‘not yet’. If you tell them,
Wait a while’, you may as well have said ‘no’, because children do not have patience. At times, we as adults act like children. We are impatient, never wanting to wait for anything. We want it now! Just look at our society. Instant this, microwave that; act now, why wait? We just do not want to wait for anything. But God allows trials and tribulations to develop our patience, build our character and increase our faith. These things help make us mature. So when trials come, know that it is just God helping us to be more mature. Hold on and don’t let go. Wait doesn’t mean denied.

“Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.” Psalms 95:1-6 NIV

De we really acknowledge and realize the mighty power of God? God demonstrates His power and might in many ways; ways we don’t understand. He created and controls all of the planets and stars of each galaxy and universe; and now we now know that there are many galaxies we didn’t know existed. He controls the seas and waves. He controls the birds of the air and beasts of the earth. And He even controls what happens to each of us too. We accomplish a few things in our life and others may call us great and mighty. But we know we fall short, make mistakes, get it wrong, offend others and generally just struggle to get through each day. But God never makes a mistake. He never fails or gets it wrong. He know what’s going on everywhere all the time! He takes care of, even when we fall. He hates sin but love us all. How can we not acknowledge and serve Him, the mighty God?

“I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him.” Psalms 40:1-3 NIV

At times, life can be particularly trying. We can have a positive outlook, expecting for all to go well. Then, in an instant, the wheels have come off the wagon, our plans are ruined and we’re lost or stranded in a place we never intended or thought we’d be. All of the planning and steps taken to try to insure success didn’t work. But when we find ourselves in these situations, and we all will, it is important to know that we have a Helper who hears our cry and lifts us up when we have fallen. Even when we’ve made missteps, don’t be afraid to cry out to Him. He is waiting to hear from us to deliver us and bring us out.

Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, Give unto the LORD glory and strength. Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come into his courts. O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: Fear before him, all the earth.” Psalms 96:7-9 KJV

We are called and created to glorify God in all that we do (Isaiah 43:7). And we glorify God by recognizing and acknowledging His glory. The meaning of glory is heavy in weight; to give weight to, or to honor. It is the weighty importance and shining majesty that accompany God’s presence. To glorify God is to recognize God for who He is and respond appropriately. We glorify Him with praise from our lips and lifting our hands in praise. We glorify Him by obeying His word. We do all and everything we want disregarding the word of God. This does not glorify God, but exalts man above God. When we make ourselves the focus, we are no longer bringing glory to or glorifying God. Let us take the focus off of ourselves. Pray to God; seek and obey His will. It is our sacrifice of praise that He desires. This will bring glory and honor to God.

“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:22-24 NIV

We read this passage and understand that we can speak to mountains (things/obstacles in our path) and cast them aside, if we believe. The key here is: do we have the faith to believe? God is able to do more than we can ask or imagine. We go to God in prayer and we expect Him to hear us and then answer our prayer. But it doesn’t always happen like that, or with the speed we desire. It’s not that our prayers aren’t answered. Often it may not be in God’s timing to give us what we are asking at that time because we are not ready to receive the blessing. It could be a curse and not a blessing. We need only look to the story of the prodigal son. He was entitled to receive what he asked for. He received it. But because of his immaturity, he lost and squandered what was intended to be a blessing. When we go to God and pray, asking in faith and believing that we will have that which we ask, we must understand that that faith in which we ask also asks God to do that which is good for us, according to His will. We must have faith to believe that God has the best intentions for us. And when we pray, we pray as He did in the Garden of Gathsemane - not my will, but thy will.

“He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” 2 Timothy 1:9-10 NIV

God’s grace comes to us through the cross of Jesus, not our works or good deeds. We are considered righteous by God through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus. We are considered right by God only because of His grace and the sacrifices of Jesus, who willingly laid down His life for us, paying the price we deserved for our rebellion against God. We don’t receive this grace because we deserve it or because of our good works. We receive it because Jesus paid the price for us when He suffered and died. This is the grace and unmerited favor we receive from God. Jesus substituted his righteousness for us that we may receive God’s grace. It is grace that forgives, covers and keeps us. Without His grace, we would be cutoff and lost. Let us thank Him for His grace.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works let any many should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:8-10 KJV

We only enter into and have a relationship with God because of His grace toward us. Grace means favor, blessing or tenderness. Grace is not something we earn, but something we are given by God. We don’t deserve it. We receive it because of His great love for us. Think back of the many blessings and favor we’ve received; the times when we didn’t receive what we deserved. That was God’s favor toward us. We are not the cause of all of the good tings that have happened to us. And, if we are honest, because of our actions and decisions, we are largely responsible for the perils we face and have experienced. But it is because of God’s grace and mercy that we are not worse than we are. In the same way, we must extend grace to others. What If God treated us like we treat others when we are crossed? Many of us would not survive. We disappoint and anger God with our disobedience and disregard for His word. Yet, He does not take us out as He could. He gives us an opportunity (grace and mercy) to repent, turn from our wickedness and still have the opportunity to receive eternal life. Can we say that we display any of these characteristics to others? Not likely. It is only by His grace that are still here. Give thanks to God for His grace and mercy that we are still here.

“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: But the wicked shall fall into mischief.” Proverbs 24:16 KJV

For the person who is doing right, failure is not the end of it all. How we live makes a difference. We may think that when we are living right we will not face adversity or failure. But this verse tells us that even a righteous man will fall, and not just once, but multiple times. The key is to realize that failure s not final. If we are doing anything, failure will likely occur at some point. Even with the best intentions, what we do doesn’t always work out like we planned. But we must realize that His word says even those who walk upright will face failure and trials. Job 14:1, says: “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.” So we won’t escape trouble and falling. The key is to not focus on the failure, but getting back up after the fall. Abraham Lincoln said, “Success is going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.” Don’t get stuck focusing on the fall. Get back up and keep going.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” 1 John 3:1 NIV

We often wonder and worry about what other think of us. We think: what is our value to them? Do we matter? We all want to be valued. But whose opinion matters about value? We place much emphasis and look to others who are flawed like we are. Seeking their opinion and approval. We give little, if any, consideration of God’s view and opinion of what he has said about who we are and our value to Him. We don’t seek Him or His opinion. But we were chosen by God. He loved and knew us even before we were born. He planned and has always had a purpose for us and our life. We are valuable to Him. He crafted and made us in His image and likeness. He redeemed us through the blood of His Son,Jesus. And we wonder about our worth to God? A God who has done all of these things and more to let us know how much He loves us, considers us His children. He provides and cares for us. We must not put our confidence in man. Believe in God and who He tells us we are. We have worth in His eyes. We matter to Him.
