I recently had the opportunity to join conflict resolution expert DDouglas E. Nollon the Listening with Leaders podcast to talk about a topic I see every day in organizations:

Why communication challenges are rarely about words — and almost always about emotions, interpretation, and human signals.

In this conversation we explore:
• How leaders unintentionally create defensiveness
• Why intent and impact often don’t match
• What helps teams move from tension to collaboration

If you work with teams, lead people, or navigate complex workplace relationships, you may find practical insights here.

I once worked with an American leader working in Mexico who couldn’t understand why a simple act of courtesy turned into road rage.

That morning, he let another driver merge at an intersection.

"I let him go ahead of me and the jerk made a rude gesture. The guy lifted his arm and showed me the back of his hand,” he said, clearly annoyed.

"So I flipped him the bird.”

I started laughing.
“He was thanking you.”

“What? No. Thank you is palm outward.”

“Not here. Palm inward is like tipping your hat. It means thank you.”
His face drained.

“OMG. He must have thought I was crazy.”
Yep. 🤣

Same gesture. Different meaning.

This is how misunderstandings happen at work too. Not because people are rude or careless, but because they’re reading signals through the wrong cultural lens.

PS: **And if you’re driving in Mexico, never honk the tune of "Shave and a Haircut." It’s not playful. It’s basically an obscenity. Could end badly. 😕

That gesture you think is harmless - isn’t. I once worked with an American leader working in Mexico who couldn’t understand why a simple act of courtesy turned into road rage. That morning, he let another driver merge at an intersection. "I let him go ahead of me and the jerk made a rude gesture...

Leadership rarely fails because of a lack of expertise. More often, it breaks down in the spaces between people: unclear expectations, unspoken assumptions, and cultural misreads.

On the Melting Pot Podcast, Payal and Maria discuss how leaders across the U.S. and Latin America can:

• Adapt communication to different people and contexts
• Address conflict before it escalates
• Build trust and alignment in diverse teams
• Move from technical competence to interpersonal intelligence

They also touch on practical frameworks from the book Untangling Communication that leaders can apply right away.

If your role involves leading people across functions, cultures, or generations, this conversation may offer useful reflection points.

Four generations share today’s workplace, but the real divide isn’t age — it’s how we learned to communicate.

Technology and asynchronous communication quietly changed how we handle emotions, conflict, and dialogue at work.

Leaders who notice this shift communicate more intentionally and avoid unnecessary friction.

Great conversation with Douglas Noll on his Listening with Leaders podcast.

At Global Bridges Training, we spend a lot of time helping leaders untangle communication challenges that slow teams down, create friction, or quietly erode trust.

That’s why we decided to make Untangling Communication: How Leaders Can Strengthen Communication, Resolve Conflict, and Build High-Performing Teams available in audio format on Kindle.

Many leaders tell us the same thing: they want practical tools, but they don’t always have time to sit down and read. The audio version makes it easier to learn on the go—during commutes, travel, or between meetings.

If you’ve already purchased the Kindle ebook, you can upgrade to the audio version for just $1.99. Here is the link:

Thank you to everyone who supported the book when it launched in September and continues to engage with the ideas we teach through our training and coaching work.

We’re excited to share that CEO Times has featured Maria Garaitonandia’s work on leadership communication and her mission to help organizations reduce costly miscommunication and strengthen team performance.

Read the full feature here:

Miscommunication drains companies of time, money, and momentum in ways many leaders overlook. A missed detail here, an unclear expectation there. These small slips add up, often shaping team culture more than any formal policy. For Maria Garaitonandia, this isn’t an abstract problem. It’s the th...

At Global Bridges Training, we love exploring the stories behind the words we use — especially when they reveal something deeper about culture and communication.

This week, I took a closer look at the origin of the word gr**go.
I’ve heard all kinds of explanations over the years — from “Green go” to soldiers singing Green Grow the Lilacs — but the real history goes much further back.

The true origin starts in Spain, long before the Mexican–American War, and it says a lot about how language evolves when cultures cross, collide, and try to understand one another.

I put together a short video breaking it down.
If you enjoy language, culture, or the way communication gets tangled across borders, you’ll like this one.

Here’s the full replay.

We explored the real cost of misalignment inside organizations, the four “knots” that derail clarity, and how leaders can use the CLEAR framework to communicate with more context, consistency, and impact.

If you want your team to work with more focus, fewer misunderstandings, and stronger alignment, this session is a great place to start.
