Less than two years after its inaugural opening, Disney has made the shocking announcement to close its highly anticipated Star Wars themed hotel, Galactic Starcruiser.

While the reasoning for this was not provided, many suspect that amongst the companies planned $5.5 billion budget cuts, the drastically overpriced experience didn't garner quite the demand they initially hoped for to justify its continuance.

At around $1200 a night per person, a weekend for two could quickly exceed $5,000; a price point deterrent enough for even the most dedicated of fans. From this example we can extract a powerful business lesson about the careful balancing act between the perceived value of a product and the real-world consumer ability to purchase it.

Even the most extravagant and intricate offerings by a company can only be enjoyed by those who can afford it, and excess for the sake of excess brings with it a lofty price tag, ultimately limiting the pool of perspective customers. Disney created something everyone wanted but no one could justify, and so this experiment ultimately failed.

What experiences have you had in your own life regarding products and services that's pricetag outweighed their value and ultimately caused their downfall? Comment below and share the post with a friend to hear their input.

We have surely all heard by now the nightly local news discussing at length the dangers AI language models such as ChatGPT pose towards the integrity of student's education and academia at large. There was certainly never a question of if teens and young adults would use these programs as an easy out for writing an essay or research paper, but what was in question by many educators is how to address it when it does happen.

One University of Virginia professor decided to seize this moment as a learning opportunity.

Instead of punishing the students for this, she rather chose to highlight the imperfect nature of the language model as compared to authentic human rhetoric. She then used these imperfect examples to spark a new wave of questions and thought experiments about language and communication for her students such as:

What models of language do human minds and communities use?
What models of language do computers use? How are they different?
Why would we want computers to mimic humans?
What are the costs and benefits of such mimicking?
Is artificial intelligence actually intelligent?
What does it mean that these systems look like they are producing knowledge, when they are actually only faking it?

What are some of your answers to these interesting concepts? As AI language models continue to improve and become more intertwined into our lives, these questions are important to ask now to set the stage for future integrity.

Ignoring ChatGPT and its cousins won’t get us anywhere. In fact, these systems reveal issues we too often miss

When a trademark becomes culturally ubiquitous, universally understood, and freely used with little thought of the consequences, does the value and purpose of that trademark still remain?

Many of us were probably unaware that the common phrase we see everywhere, every week, is actually the intellectual property of a Midwestern fast-food chain that licensed the catchy phrase over three decades ago. But in fact, Taco Tuesday is a trademarked phrase that, technically could, be pursued litigiously if the trademark holder chose to.

Clearly that is not the case, as the phrase is still widely used by small tex-mex restaurants all over the country, but giant corporations like Taco Bell probably wouldn’t be as lucky with that gamble. Taco Bell is seeking legal action to change that, stating "nobody should have exclusive rights in a common phrase."

What are your thoughts? Should the trademark be moved into the public domain, and if so, should Taco John's be compensated for the forfeit? Or is it their right to continue to hold the phrase as its founder, and if others use it for financial gain, they can be held liable at Taco John's discretion?

Taco Bell wants to liberate the "Taco Tuesday" trademark from a smaller, rival chain.

We all knew this day would come, and it seems the first has arrived; the NFL will officially air one game this season exclusively on a streaming service. NBC's Peacock will host the wild card game that's scheduled to take place on January 13th, 2024, which is the first playoff weekend. The game will only be made available on the streaming platform and those local channel affiliates of the areas of the competing teams.

This marks the first time that an NFL game has been shown through one exclusive and paid subscription-based means of viewing. While options like Sunday Ticket or NFL on Prime have taken place in the past, there has always been an alternative means of watching a game, be it through another streaming service or cable network channel.

NFL chief operating officer Hans Schroeder has acknowledged that the decision could upset some fans who'll have to get Peacock to watch that one game, but he believes it "will be transformative for sports on digital." Schroeder continues and said “the NFL will likely continue making one of its wild card games exclusively accessible via streaming going forward.” This single game deal cost NBC around $110 million.

Some would view a Harvard masters grad working in an ice cream shop as being considered both a failure and a waste of talent, but Annie Park proves to us that success comes in many forms.

Using the knowledge and understanding of policy and management she acquired during her Ivy League education, she assisted her mother in parlaying their small entrepreneurial venture into a multi-establishment, booming business. Bringing in well over $200,000 a year in salary and with her eyes set on expanding their beloved brand even further, Annie shows no signs of slowing down.

From her story, we can all learn something about what success can look like in our own lives. This certainly wasn't the future she had imagined for herself just a few years ago, and for some of us in her shoes, it would seem like we had no business or future in taking that chance. But Annie shows that our own skills and knowledge have vast applications, and we can find success in any field we choose to put our efforts into, not just the mold we create for ourselves.

The advanced language model developed by OpenAI, is poised to revolutionize the field of cybersecurity. By leveraging its natural language processing capabilities, ChatGPT can be employed to detect and prevent potential security threats.

This is achieved by the model’s ability to analyze and interpret large volumes of text-based data, enabling it to identify patterns and anomalies that may indicate cyberattacks or vulnerabilities. This technology has the potential to significantly enhance threat detection and response systems, offering a proactive approach to cybersecurity.

Furthermore, ChatGPT's ability to understand and generate human-like text makes it valuable in social engineering simulations, helping organizations train their employees to recognize and respond to phishing attempts and other manipulative techniques.

What are your thoughts on AI being integrated into cybersecurity operations? Does the automation and advanced computing allow for less human interaction and error as well as faster and more accurate results, or are these programs themselves a liability and their incorporation only expands the attack surface instead of narrowing it? Comment your take below and share the post with a friend to hear their input.

Whether automating tasks or assisting in building new ideas, ChatGPT and other AI tools can help amplify and reinforce cybersecurity.

Vice Media, a digital media company, has filed for bankruptcy. The company, known for its edgy content and focus on youth culture, struggled with financial difficulties exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vice faced challenges such as declining advertising revenue and increased competition in the media industry, something others such as Vox and BuzzFeed faced as well. The bankruptcy filing comes after the company attempted to diversify its revenue streams and reduce costs through layoffs and restructuring.

Vice Media plans to continue operating while restructuring its debt and seeking new investments to revive its business. What are your thoughts on the ability for smaller news outlets and journalistically independent reporters to continue to exist and operate as ad revenue is turned towards legacy media and more mainstream sources? Do you foresee any consequences from these voices disappearing? Share your thoughts below on how independent media companies like Vice can find new streams of revenue in our evolving economy.

The company, once valued at $5.7 billion, has struggled with debts and shrinking ad revenue in recent years.

Streaming services were once pitched as the alternative to cable, offering a similar library of content and entertainment for a fraction of the price. But as most of us know, cutting the cord and making the switch to streaming doesn't end with just one service.

Many of us have enough subscriptions that, in total, add up to nearly the same as a cable bill, and some of those services we may only access once or twice a month anyway. Disney seems to be aware of this and in an effort to get ahead of more cost-conscious consumers trimming the fat on streaming spending, has announced a merger of their services.

Coming on the heels of their recent low earnings report from streaming, and the mass exodus happening at Netflix, it seems they're forcing customers into a tough decision of an all-or-none deal to access their content, even if you would only realistically consume some of it. This will surely carry with it a higher price tag as well.

What are your thoughts on large media corporations limiting their more “a la carte” options in favor of a “one price gets it all” approach? Does the convenience and large library justify the price or is the monopolistic move limiting customers to a binary choice? Share your thoughts below and tag a friend to get their input.

Microsoft has signed a deal with Helion, a startup backed by Sam Altman, to purchase electricity from Helion's future fusion power plant. The plant, expected to open in 2028, aims to be the world's first fusion power plant.

The agreement is significant as it is the first fusion power purchase agreement between two companies, although commercial fusion technology is still under development and scientists predict it may take years or even decades to be realized.

The partnership aligns with Microsoft's goal to be carbon negative by 2030, and Helion is actively working toward operating a fusion power plant by 2018. What are your thoughts on this latest move? Has Altman struck gold twice with the tech giant, or are they setting themselves up to be at the forefront of a revolutionary movement? Comment below with your thoughts and share the post with a friend to keep the conversation going.

The consumer price index rose 4.9% in April 2023, the smallest increase in two years, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday in a monthly inflation report. While a rise was expected, this was a smaller spike than experts expected.

Additionally, the index also fell from 5% in March marking inflation readings weakening for 10 consecutive months from its peak in June 2022 which saw a historic 9.1% peak. Households seem to be getting relief in staple categories such as food, energy, and housing.

Check out the article for a full breakdown as well as a chart that shows what products went up the highest and what fell the lowest over the past two years. Then comment below with your thoughts and predictions on how the market will move next.

Inflation moderated for the 10th consecutive month in April. Households will likely see continuing price relief in food, energy and housing, economists said.

This is the unfortunate situation Google currently finds itself in.

Google, under parent Alphabet, "has been investing in AI for years, had great AI products, but fell behind Microsoft last year by keeping it aside for fear that it would cannibalize its core business. Now its core business is under massive threat.”

Analysts said that, while Google has strong AI technology, it hasn’t brought it into products fast enough, as Microsoft has done.

“Google’s issue is that they have the brightest minds in AI, they have the rockstars, they have a third of the top hundred cited papers in AI, but they’re an engineering-led company, and they have not productized what they’ve done."
