Nonprofit founder burnout is not a character flaw. It is an organizational systems problem, and it is one we need to talk about more honestly in this sector.
When one person carries the weight of an entire mission, when there are no clear boundaries between founder and organization, when the team is stretched thin and the funding is unpredictable, something will eventually break. Usually, it is the leader.
As nonprofit consultants, we have seen this pattern hundreds of times. And more importantly, we have helped leaders on the other side of it rebuild sustainable structures that protect both the mission and the people behind it.
You did not start this organization to run yourself into the ground. You built something meaningful. You deserve systems that support you, not exhaust you.
If you are feeling it right now, you are not alone, and there is a way through. ๐
