Will the panels still be there after the storm?

Beautiful intracoastal home, and we kept the front roof completely clean.

We put about 11,000 watts on the south and back roofs, the best exposures on this house. Nothing on the front, so the curb appeal stays exactly the way it was. Maximize the good sun, protect the aesthetics.

The homeowner went with Hyundai 440 watt bifacial modules on all black rail and racking. We flash every pe*******on into the truss and shed water around it. That is how we hit a 140 plus mile per hour wind load on our engineering. Out on the intracoastal, that matters.

Their meter is swapped and they are fully up and running. Tesla also lets us run the system on no export before the utility swaps the meter, so you are not staring at a finished system waiting weeks on FPL to come out.

One box. 27 kilowatt hours of backup.

The Tesla Powerwall 3 is an inverter and a battery in the same unit: 11,500 watts of output and a 13.5 kilowatt hour battery built in. This customer had plenty of output, they just wanted more storage. So instead of a second full Powerwall, we added an expansion pack for a lot less money. Another 13.5, for 27 total.

That is enough to run every load in the house at once, and enough to carry them through the night until the sun comes back up, takes over the loads, and recharges the battery.

The box above the system is the Tesla Gateway 3. It is the brains and the automatic transfer switch. When it sees a grid outage it disconnects from the grid and moves the main panel over to solar and battery in under a second. Seamless. It does not even reset the clocks. Most homeowners never know the power went out.

You have a battery. So why are you still connected to the grid?

Even with a Tesla Powerwall, your system is grid connected 90 to 95 percent of the time. The battery is there for backup and for running the house at night. Day to day, you are still buying from and selling to FPL.

FPL installs a bi-directional meter so power flows both ways. Your bill shows a delivered number and a received number. Delivered is what they sold you, received is what they got back, and the difference is your net. In Florida the large utilities pay one for one, so every excess kilowatt hour you send back is worth full retail rate.

Here is the part most people miss. As utility rates go up, every watt your solar makes is worth more. And we all know Florida bills are not going down.

How many panels does your pool actually need? Here's how we figure it out.

In Volusia County, we size a system so the solar panels on your roof cover about 80 percent of your pool's surface area. That ratio is the sweet spot for our climate. More panels, more heat.

Up in Jacksonville you need more coverage. Down in Brevard you can get away with less. Sizing it right for your location is the difference between a pool that's warm in March and one that isn't.

This pool has three heaters: gas, electric, and now solar. Only one of them heats for free.

We installed seven Aquatherm EcoSun panels on the side roof of this New Smyrna Beach home. The solar handles the everyday heating with free heat from the sun, so the gas and electric heaters barely have to run anymore.

And it's all automatic. The system ties into the Hayward automation the customer already had, so he and his wife just pick the temperature they want. The solar turns itself on and off with the heat of the day. It even revs the pool pump up when the panels are hot, then drops it back down to an energy saving speed when they're not.

We put two solar attic fans on this Ormond Beach home, then climbed up on the roof to check the crew's work. They didn't even know we were coming. Here's what we found.

Most homes only need one attic fan. This ranch house is long, so it took two to properly vent both ends of the attic.

These units are built for Florida: marine grade aluminum, powder coated, with the solar panel built right into the top. Each one is rated for up to 2,500 square feet, and we oversize on purpose to move more air.

The install matters just as much as the hardware. The flashing goes up under the shingles so water sheds around the unit, we seal everything with a 50 year roof sealant, and we never cut into a structural truss.

The payoff shows up on your power bill. A cooler attic means your AC runs less all summer.
