Aftermath of Sandpoint, Idaho Winemaker’s Dinner

Congratulation to Genesis Mountain Farm, chef Dave Gerszewski and the staff assisting with the Brazilian themed dinner held July 11th outside of Sandpoint, Idaho. 80 guests were served a memorable meal made so by the fresh – sustainable – organic produce provided by Genesis Mountain Farm, the skill of David and our delicious wines!

Athena, Caris and I would like to take a moment to thank those guests in attendance and our gracious hosts. Your kind words and reception given our wines made for a meaningful evening. Our winemaking efforts were well received to say the least.

We were doubly blessed as our sister Cathy and brother Nick Cathy Sandidge Friend came to surprise us by visiting and sharing the experience with us. It was a beautiful day had by all.

We are having an exceptionally fun holiday this first week of July! Yesterday we had a wonderful time hosting the local golf gals after their beautiful morning on the greens of Desert Canyon Golf Resort The Lodge at Desert Canyon Resort ⛳️🏌️‍♀️
and featured the artful and delicious charcuterie provided by The Gilded Grove Board Co. What a perfect way to end a great day of recreation along the Columbia River.

We’ll continue to share The Gilded Grove Board Co snacks during seasonal events visits and wine tastings. These visually stunning and tasty charcuterie items will be available for guests as we continue taking reservations into summer 2026 🍷

The style and quality of wine produced from grapes are greatly affected by vine training and trellising, which vary across different regions worldwide, including within the Columbia Valley AVA.

Unique soil conditions, slope requirements, and environmental factor’s associated to the giant glacial lake, dictate the use of specific trellises and vine training in areas like the Lake Chelan AVA and Rocky Reach AVA.

Shorter cordon training, replacement cane or spur pruned, 🌱with vertical shoot position (VSP)

• dependent on the Columbia Rivers air currents to protect from spring frost and winter damage
• shorter vine cordon length and trellis keeps the canopy and fruit closer to the warm rocky & reflective soil, extending ripening
• wind and breezes from the Columbia River increases evaporation of water from the canopy and fruit intensifies the juice for full bodied, juicy and intensly floral dark red wine, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and luscious Grenacha.

Unique soil conditions, slope requirements, and environmental factor’s associated to the giant glacial lake, dictate the use of specific trellises and vine training in areas like the Lake Chelan AVA and Rocky Reach AVA. In Lake Chelan's high elevation and short growing season, specialized training methods enable the production of ripe dark red grapes and complex varieties with;

Higher cordon training, replacement cane or spur pruned, 🌱with vertical shoot position (VSP)

• protects buds from spring frost and winter damage
• shields fruit from hot reflective soils, slowing down sugar production in relation to phenolic levels during ripening
• and increases sunlight exposure for enhanced color and tannin development for full bodied dark red wine, like Malbec, Syrah and even Tannat.

These things along with the unique glacial soils, adequate slope and lake effect, help create the unique wine characteristics of the area.

I’ll take you through our area estate vineyards in the Lake Chelan AVA and Rocky Reach AVA to discuss how vineyards impact the style and quality of grapes grown for wine producers in our region.
