The holiday bins are about to come down from the attic and up from the garage shelves. Before you carry them into the living room, five quick checks:

1. Open them in the garage or on the driveway first, not on the living room carpet.

2. Look in the bottom corners for droppings, chewed edges, or shredded paper and fabric. That means a mouse spent part of the year in there.

3. Run the string lights through your hands before they go up. Chewed insulation on the wire is a rodent sign and a fire risk, so retire that strand.

4. Shake out wreaths, garland, and tree skirts outside. Folded fabric that hasn't moved since January makes a quiet hiding spot.

5. Toss any edible decor that got packed away by mistake, like popcorn garland or old candy canes. Mice and pantry pests find those first.

If a bin shows signs someone's been living in the attic, our team can find how they're getting in and seal it up. Free estimate, family-owned and locally operated since 1992. 🏡

Winged bugs lifting off the lawn on a sunny day after the rain? Before you assume the worst, take a closer look. Here's how to tell termite swarmers from flying ants:

1. Waist: Ants are pinched in the middle like an hourglass. Termites are thick from head to tail.

2. Antennae: ant antennae bend at an elbow. Termite antennae are straight, like a string of tiny beads.

3. Wings: termites have four wings of equal length. Flying ants have a longer front pair.

4. Wings left behind: termites drop their wings fast. A little pile of identical wings on a windowsill is a strong clue.

Western subterranean termites swarm on calm, sunny days after the first fall rains, and parts of the Sacramento Valley are known for it. A swarm out in the yard doesn't automatically mean your house has a problem. Swarmers or wings indoors are worth a closer look.

The full guide is on the Hunters Services blog, including what to do (and what to skip) if you spot a swarm. 🏡

Brought the patio plants in ahead of the cold nights? If tiny flies start circling the window about a week later, those are fungus gnats, and they say nothing at all about how clean your house is. 🌿 They develop in the top inch of wet potting soil, so the pots came indoors with the next generation already in them, and keeping the summer watering schedule going keeps that layer damp enough to carry it on. Let the top inch dry out between waterings and the cycle breaks on its own. If you are seeing them well away from the plants, something else in the room is holding moisture, and that part is worth a look. Hunters Services has been doing eco friendly IPM across Northern California since 1992.

October and November are when most property managers and HOA boards set next year's operating budget, and pest control is usually the easiest line to carry forward at last year's number.

The trouble is that the scope rarely gets revisited even when the property did change. Units turned over, the landscaping was replaced, an enclosure moved, a building came online. The number holds, the scope quietly drifts, and the gap tends to surface around June when there is nothing left in the budget to address it.

The wet season is also the one stretch of the year when you can actually see where water collects and where harborage sits on a property. That makes right now the most useful time to walk it, not the driest week of next summer.

If you are scoping an Integrated Pest Management program for next year, walk the property with your provider before the number is locked rather than after. Hunters Services has built IPM programs for Northern California properties since 1992, licensed and insured, CA Lic. OPR 9803.

Spent a Saturday raking dry brush and star thistle into a pile at the back fence? That pile is not gone, it is just moved, and until it gets hauled off it is cover sitting at ground level right against your fence line. 🍂 The bigger half of the problem is already in the soil, because those plants dropped their seed before they dried out, so the same patch comes back thicker next spring. A w**d abatement plan carried through the wet months means a great deal less to clear when fire season comes around again. Hunters Services is family owned in Oroville and has looked after Northern California properties since 1992.

If you've got a few flies showing up on the inside of a sunny window this month, they probably aren't breeding in your house. 🌤️

Cluster flies spend their early life outdoors, where the larvae develop on earthworms in the soil. Come fall, the adults look for somewhere sheltered to wait out winter, and the gaps around window frames, siding seams, and attic vents are exactly the kind of space they're after. Once a group settles into a wall void, a warm afternoon heats the glass nearby and draws a few of them out into the room. That's why they turn up at the same south and west windows again and again, and why treating the glass doesn't change anything.

What does change is what happens outside. Right now, with nights cooling off while the afternoons stay warm, they're still working their way in. Sealing the gaps around frames, vents, and siding this month is worth more than anything you do indoors later.

Our trained technicians can walk your exterior and show you where they're getting in, then build a plan around your home. Family-owned and locally operated in Oroville since 1992. Free estimate, no pressure. (530) 342-8950

Here's the belief that trips people up most often when they're moving into a place: "I'd know, because I'd have bites."

Reaction to bed bug bites varies a lot from person to person, and plenty of people show no visible reaction at all. That makes bites one of the least reliable things to go by. What's actually reliable is physical evidence, and it sits in predictable spots: the piping and seams of a mattress, the gaps in a bed frame where the rails meet the posts, the back of a headboard, and the carpet edge along the baseboard nearest the bed.

So if you're about to move into a home someone else lived in, that's a ten-minute look with a flashlight before your own furniture comes through the door. Most of the time you find nothing, and you've bought yourself some peace of mind. 🔎

And if you do find something, it's not a reflection on you or on the house. Bed bugs travel with people; that's the whole story. Our team handles it discreetly and builds a treatment plan around your home. Family-owned and locally operated in Oroville since 1992. Free estimate. (530) 342-8950

Most pest management plans for a restaurant are written around the building. In October, a lot of Northern California operators change the building.

Side curtains go up on the patio, the heaters come out, and a space that was fully exterior in August becomes a warm, partly enclosed room with seating, food debris and soft furnishings in it. The pest pressure moves with it. Vinyl panels create dead air and condensation along the base, heaters hold a microclimate well above the outside night temperature, and the patio door gets propped more often than anyone will admit on a busy service.

None of that is a problem on its own. It becomes one when the plan on file still treats the patio as outdoors. The practical step is walking the enclosure once it's up, so the service points, the door sweeps and the sanitation touchpoints match how the space is actually being used for the next five months.

Hunters Services has handled commercial pest management across Northern California since 1992, working Integrated Pest Management first. We were the first eco certified pest control company in NorCal, and we're licensed and insured, CA Lic. OPR 9803.

If you bought your house this year, this is your first October in it, and you have no baseline yet for what it is supposed to sound like at 10pm.

So here is one to file away. That chirping in the garage is almost always a single cricket. Only the males call, they are built to be heard from a long way off, and one of them in a mostly empty garage with concrete and drywall to bounce off sounds like a crowd. Crickets also do badly indoors. Nothing is setting up shop in there. One wandered in and now it is stuck.

The part worth your attention is not the cricket. It is how it got in. Most often it is the rubber seal along the bottom of the garage door, which goes brittle and pulls away at the corners, or the threshold where the slab meets the driveway. Easy way to check: stand inside with the door shut and the lights off in the evening. If you can see a line of daylight along the bottom, there is your answer, and it is the same opening everything else is using.

Replacing that seal is a Saturday job. If you would rather have someone look at the whole envelope and tell you what else is open, that is what our technicians do, with an IPM approach that starts by keeping things out. Family owned and locally operated in Oroville since 1992.
