Summer is here! As the weather heats up, refrigerators can start having issues. Here are a few quick maintenance tips for your refrigerator.

1. Make sure you have air flow around the unit. Keep the unit an inch or so away from the walls or cabinets.

2. Clean the coils. Clear the dust from the back of the unit and under the unit.

3. Check the door seals. Loose, torn or damaged seals can let cold air out and warm air in. Clean seals with a mixture of baking soda and water. A toothbrush is a great tool for this. Try the dollar Bill test. Place a dollar bill half in and half out of the closed door. Tug on the dollar bill, if it easily pulls out you may need new seals.

4. Keep refrigerator full. Refrigerators need thermal mass( lots of stuff) to help maintain temps. Food and beverages inside the refrigerator help to absorb warm air that is let in when door is opened and closed. If you don’t keep a lot of items in the refrigerator, maybe keep a few jugs of water in there.
