Chrysanthemum ‘Sheffield Pink’ is in bloom, bringing soft apricot-pink, daisy-like flowers to the fall garden just as many other perennials begin to fade.

Amsonia hubrichtii (Arkansas Bluestar) is a standout perennial for fall color. Its fine, threadlike green foliage transforms into a brilliant golden yellow in autumn, bringing texture and warmth to the landscape. In spring, delicate, star-shaped pale blue flowers provide another season of interest.

Hardy in Zones 4–9, native to the USA, this low-maintenance perennial is an excellent choice for mass plantings and perennial borders.

Cotinus × ‘Grace’ is a striking hybrid between Cotinus obovatus (American smoketree) and Cotinus coggygria ‘Velvet Cloak’. Its large, reddish-purple leaves mature to a soft, blue-green with silvery undertones before transforming into brilliant shades of red, orange, and scarlet in autumn.

A beautiful choice for exceptional seasonal color and texture in the landscape.

Ginkgo biloba puts on one of the most remarkable displays of fall color. In about a month, this fully green tree will turn brilliant golden yellow before dropping nearly all of its leaves in a remarkably short period, sometimes within a single day!

John Stella also explains the fascinating reproductive process of this ancient species, including how male trees release pollen into the air, which is captured by structures on female trees.

A unique tree with a history dating back millions of years!

Two seasons of color from one remarkable tree!

Heptacodium miconioides, commonly known as Seven-son Flower, puts on a beautiful late-season display. Fragrant white flowers bloom in late summer, followed by vibrant rose-red calyces (the structures that surround the flowers) that persist well into fall, creating the appearance of a second bloom!

This small ornamental tree also features attractive exfoliating bark, adding interest to the winter landscape.

Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8, Seven-son Flower is an excellent choice for extending seasonal interest in the garden.

Poncirus trifoliata ‘Flying Dragon’

This hardy, deciduous citrus relative is known for its dramatically twisted green branches and curved thorns. Once the foliage drops, its unusual branching structure becomes the star of the winter garden.

In spring, fragrant white flowers appear, followed by small, yellow-orange fruits in fall.

Hardy to USDA Zones 5–9, ‘Flying Dragon’ makes an exceptional architectural specimen for year-round interest. Plant away from walkways due to its formidable thorns.

The Science of Fall Planting | Part 3: Fertilizer & Water Requirements

As plants prepare for winter dormancy, their nutrient demands decrease, making late-season fertilization less beneficial than during the active growing season.

Water, however, remains essential!

Although cooler temperatures and reduced plant activity lower watering requirements, newly planted and transplanted trees and shrubs still need adequate moisture well into late fall.

Consistent watering helps reduce transplant stress, supports root establishment, and prepares plants for the winter months.

Understanding these seasonal changes can help landscape professionals make better decisions when planting and maintaining landscapes in the fall.

Part 2 of The Science of Fall Planting: the plants behind the color.

John takes a closer look at some of the plants showing strong fall color and the different yellows, oranges, reds, and purples we see as the season changes.

Featured plants:
Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Twist-n-Shout’
Hydrangea serrata ‘Bluebird’
Cephalanthus occidentalis ‘Sugar Shack’
Asclepias incarnata ‘Ice Ballet’
Vaccinium corymbosum ‘Bluecrop’
Stewartia pseudocamellia

Different plants, different pigments, and a great look at what leaf senescence can reveal in the landscape.

The science of fall planting goes far beyond changing leaf color.

As daylight decreases, chlorophyll begins to break down and other pigments become visible. Xanthophylls bring out yellows, carotenoids contribute oranges, and anthocyanins create many of the reds and purples we associate with fall.

But those changes also tell us something important about what is happening inside the plant. Nutrients and sugars are being redistributed, water needs are changing, and plants are entering a stage that can be ideal for digging and transplanting.

Understanding leaf senescence helps landscape professionals make better decisions about fertilizing, watering, planting, and moving material as the season changes.
