MAKING A SET OF RUNES
There is no right or wrong with your choice of stone or wood when you decide to make your own runes set. It is up to the individual to use what resonates with you, there are other things that have been used, such as bone, or clay, but stone or wood are the more common. (PLEASE do not make them from plastic, I saw a plastic set in a shop one day & was horrified, it was as if they had no 'soul', they were just nothingness & I was actually quite shocked that someone had done this.) Once the choice is made of what to use, the next step is which one, trees all have meanings, as do stones & crystals. Choose which one resonates with you.
You can collect pebbles from a stream you love, a beach you go to, or a nature trail you walk, these will have special meaning even before you make them into runes. Remember to thank the Goddess & nature spirits for your gift, (my children & I do a little clean up in an area we collect natural things from as a thank you). If you choose to work with crystals, you can have them all the same one, or match the meaning of the rune with a crystal & use different ones for each. Some people actually have more than one set, & use different ones for different purposes, eg. a Rose Quartz set for matters of the heart etc. You must remember that whether using stones or crystals they should all be fairly flat, & roughly the same size, they don't have to be perfectly round.
If you decide to use wood, a fallen branch from a favourite tree would be wonderful, but not always available. I myself wouldn't recommend any particular one, I think this needs to be a very personal choice. Whether you find a fallen branch or have to cut one, please remember to thank, the tree for it's gift. The branch you choose shouldn't be too thick, & needs to be long enough to cut 24 (25 if you wish to use the Wyrd, or blank rune), slices. How you cut the slices is up to you.
The rune symbols can be carved, painted, drawn, or scorched into your chosen material. It's a good idea that when you reach this point, to have the rune meanings nearby, so that as you mark each one you can concentrate on that meaning, to 'put it into your rune. Some people like to use a sealant on the finished product so that the symbols don't wear off, this again is a personal choice.
Once you have finished, the next step is to consecrate & Bless your runes to yourself as a divinatory tool. This can be done by whichever method you usually use. To charge your runes it is said that if you put them into their correct order, that this has a cleansing, & re-energizing effect on them. You can also place them in Moon or Sun light, put them on a crystal cluster, or smudge them. Your runes should be kept in a draw string bag when not in use, you can buy these, but I like to make my own.
