Chinch bugs are winning in Central Florida right now. It's not just the bugs.

Southern chinch bug resistance to pyrethroids and neonicotinoids is well documented across Florida — but that's only part of the story. The other part is thatch.

Chinch bugs live in the thatch layer. So does most of the insecticide you spray. It binds up in that spongy layer and never reaches the insect. Meanwhile the sand underneath holds no water, the turf sits drought-stressed, and stressed St. Augustine has no ability to outgrow the feeding damage.
