Service and the Responsibility of Leadership
This Memorial Day, as we honor those who sacrificed their lives in service to this country, we reflect not only on courage, but on responsibility. The stories of World War II veterans resonate deeply as we continue to witness both the worst and the best of humanity — destruction, but also sacrifice, resilience, and compassion.
Freedom, liberty, and justice are not self-sustaining. Every generation must choose to preserve them. While few serve on a battlefield, all of us are called to serve — in our communities, workplaces, and in how we lead and care for others.
This month, we begin another season of service through our Greater Milwaukee Foundation Milwaukee nonprofit cohort initiative, and we want to recognize the Nonprofit Management Fund as a key partner in this initiative. Nine nonprofit organizations will receive support in strategic planning, facilitation, and leadership development from our team and facilitators-in-training: MKE Black, Dominican Center, Curative Care, Arts Center Inc., Portal, inc Grafton, Joyce's Legacy Learning Center, Your Move MKE Inc., Sherman Phoenix, Housing Resources, Inc.
At HueLife, we believe leadership is not a position, but a practice — showing up, creating space for dialogue, and helping communities navigate complexity together.
What inspires us most is the people behind this work. Professionals volunteer their time and talent not for recognition, but because they believe strong leadership and meaningful communication can strengthen communities and improve lives.
Service takes many forms. Sometimes it is extraordinary sacrifice. Other times, it is consistency — listening, guiding difficult conversations, and building the capacity for people to work toward something better.
We are deeply grateful to those who continue to serve and commit to leading well: Greg Stopka, Dr. Victor Amaya, PhD, Levon Williams, Christian Huble, Madeline Kvale, Megan Jacobson, Travis Beck, Debra Laine, and Matthew Podhradsky — as well as our nonprofit partners, volunteer facilitators, mentors, and community champions.
Together, we are building the skills, relationships, and conversations that make sustainable change possible.
