REMEMBERING GENERAL COLIN L. POWELL

Colin L. Powell, April 5, 1937 – October 18, 2021, AGE 84

Remembered today as a political leader that worked at the highest levels as the Secretary of State, GEN Collin Powell (Ret.) is also remembered as an exceptional Soldier.

As a young ROTC graduate and Second Lieutenant, GEN Powell felt the sting of racism in early 1960’s Georgia but also the remarkable pride of being an infantry officer in the U.S. Army. In 1962 Powell was sent to Vietnam where he worked as an advisor with the South Vietnamese Army until he was injured in 1963.

Powell returned to Vietnam in 1968 to serve with the Americal (23rd Infantry) Division where, after a UH-1 Huey he was traveling in crashed, he rescued three Soldiers including the Americal’s division commander, MG Charles M. Getty earning the Soldier’s Medal for his bravery and quick action.

Powell went on to serve as a White House Fellow, a battalion commander in Korea, and a brigade commander in the 101st Airborne Division. Powell’s career shifted to that of senior military advisor where he worked for several administrations eventually becoming the third general since World War II to reach four-star rank without ever serving as a division commander, joining Dwight D. Eisenhower and Alexander Haig.

He served as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was the architect of the invasion of Panama (Operation Just Cause) and the Persian Gulf War (Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm). He retired from the Army in 1993.
