Combat Benefit Marketing Tips

Welcome to my new column exploring some of my common sense benefit marketing ideas and experiences accumulated after a number of years in this business.

Information overload

In today’s world, people do not want complex concepts thrown at them. There are so many pieces of information bombarding people at a high speed that individuals want to spend no more than a few seconds reading, understanding and ultimately, acting. Unfortunately, the prevailing practice when marketing or communicating complex concepts like money, investing, or retirement is to put an inordinate amount of information in front of people using the theory that somehow people will read through all of the material and become an educated consumer. Magically all of their objections have been overcome and they cannot wait to act upon this new found knowledge. In reality copious amounts of information triggers in many people a “flight response” known as information overload. This condition results in divisive procrastination or in some cases inaction all-together.

The moral of this story is to keep your concepts simple, give people small bites of information (without being deceptive), encourage them to start small, and make the call to action extremely elementary to act upon. My personal experience after many years in the business is that if a marketing professional uses this “easy” approach, greater results will be achieved both in the short and long term.
